I'm considering getting a 'traytop' style camper but as i've got a standard ute body (Triton) vehicle I don't have many makes to choose from.
Has any seen/owned one of these for a 'tub' body or even a traytop model? I'd be very interested to read any comments.

There is only 2 of us to accomodate in the unit.

Thanks
George

George.
It is very easy to take the tub off and fit any make camper on. To make it very easy you can get an electrical plug for the tail lights from a wrecker so there is no messing with wires during the transfer. Just 6 nuts hold the tub on and the screws to change the number plate. Eric.l

Hi George

A friend of mine has one of these to fit in her Navara ute tubhttp://www.trailblazersrv.com.
The site has a Melbourne number to contact.
If you click on events/reviews that is something similar to what she has.

In answer to your traytop question, we have the carryme camper and for us it works. Easy to setup and easy to pull down.

Best working out the pros and cons and go from there.

Hi Craig

Had a look - where did you buy/choose yours? What do you like/dislike about it?

Hi George, the unit is a Carry Me Camper. We chose this for the following reasons:

Easily removed/placed on the tray (gives us two vehicles in one).
Relatively light weight compared to some other units.
Able to fit it out ourselves.
5 1/2" inner spring mattress, not foam.
Cost was soooo much cheaper than comparable units.
Very good value for money considering what is included as standard.
Being off the ground - handy in some places:)
Low profile (lets me get it into tight places like my garage).
Low profile keeps the weight down nice and low - safer driving, lower fuel consumption than a tall unit.
Side fold-out tent covers kitchen area - sahde / wet weather, etc.
Gull wing type doors open upwards giving weather protection.
Awnings permanently attached to tent section (great in inclement weather set-ups).
Fast set up and pack - less than 5 minutes even with one person.
Ability to carry two spares on rims on the rear of the canopy.
Fantastic after sales service, go out of their way to ensure complete satisfaction and like customer feedback for future improvements(?).
And finally, it's what the wife preferred:)

Dislikes (being honest here, too):

Sometimes hitting my head on the rolled up awnings as they can be a bit low and I am tall-ish.
Bit hard to base camp with it, but it is quick to pack up as I said above so to us is not an issue if we want to go for a day drive, etc.

All in all, the wife and I are extremely happy with the camper and should have gone down this track years ago.

George, have a look at Candy's website www.candycanvas.com.au
and if you are actually in Adelaide feel free to come around and have a look at mine.

I believe there will also be a good selection of campers at the 4x4 show in October - good chance to compare and ask lots and lots of questions!

Best regards,

Craig, on the subject of base camping, is it to much hassle to take off for short periods? Paps.

Nice work Craig....I wish I could fit mine in the garage!

We went custom built to enable us to do it the way we wanted.

Hi Pas, for short periods I would say yes, but in saying this we have done it on several occasions. We just find it easier to pack and go as we have become quite proficient in packing up quickly. And, as an added bonus, if you do 'pack and go' the fridge and all your stuff goes with you:))))

Thanks for the great appraisal Craig - I am in Adel;aide, at Blackwood, but as I would go for the tub body mount I don't know if seeing your tray top would help???? thanks for the offer though.

I did notice that they intend to be at the October show - I will go but in the meantime just wondered if they have an Adelaide showroom.

Thanks for all the replies.

R

No George they don't have an Adelaide showroom, just the factory in Tintinara. Sorry, you tricked me with the bit about a tray-topper in your original post.

All the best mate.

We have the standard Carry me Camper. Has been on CSR, Central Oz, border Track, Coorong x 5, Goog's Track and Flinders Ranges so far. They are pretty good. Assume tub model would be as good. Good quality canvas and well made. No dust entry issues. We have done 25,000km with ours mainly on dirt roads. Showroom is at tintinara but they go to most 4wd and camping shows around Australia. As for leaving it set up: it is quicker to pack it up. With the wife set up time is 5 - 6 minutes from stopping to having a red in the hand. Record is 4 minutes (was thirsty). We have a pantry in ours so overnight stop setup requires 2 pegs and 5 poles then two chairs, two glasses and one bottle. Bedding stays in the camper. We can usually be set up by the time a lot of people have the tent layed out on the ground. Most delays are for demos on set up/pack up to others who have noticed how quick it was. We used to have a 30 sec tent and this setup is faster.
