POSITIVES:

Steel is stronger
Steel can be welded more easily
Alloy is lighter

NEGATIVES (surprise surprise)

Steel is heavier (need heavier springs maybe)
Alloy doesn't handle animal strikes as well

My suggestion (having had both types over the years): STEEL without a doubt!!!

go the steel -not much heavier and actually does the job - alloy looks good but rarely copes with much of an impact

Alloy vs med roo. Dead heat, the roo is dead but the bar is a right off.

Steel vs 1 large roo, 2 med roos then another large roo, eventually they wore it down. The last roo was nearly 2m tall and I was a little over the 110km/h limit. The bar got bent but I still drove home. The bar is about to get replaced 10 months later.

I'd go steel.

STEEL!!!

A lot easier to weld if you need to carry out repairs to it.
