Gone Bush (WA)
After 12,000 kms
Perth and back via all sorts of
places:
The speedo over reads by 6%. That is, if the speedo says 100kph I am actually doing 94. ADRs allow a 10% error. I must remember that next time I get snapped doing less than 10% over the limit.
The odometer, however, is spot on. They must get their info from different sources.
At highway speeds the drivers door mirror shakes to the point of being hopeless in the rough air coming off the
snorkel.
The window control housing on the drivers door digs into my knee causing great discomfort.
Sound system is the pits.
The engine is outstanding.
The rest of the vehicle is a cynical exercise on Toyota's behalf. It is penny pinching and condascending towards their customers.
But what do they care? Australia wide they have hundreds on back order.

Interesting what you said about the window control Gone Bush.
I have the same problem with the one on my 60 series.
But I kept leaning my knee on and it eventually cracked the circuit board inside.
Nothing about $400 wouldn't fix :<((((.
Watch where you put your knee.

I wanna try one as a comparo vs my Chevissan,
I bet the Tojo V8 is quicker once it's wound up but doesn't have the torque from tickover.
I have to try one out,,,,,,,,,

Have given one a touch up and they are quick.
Give them a boot full from stop and they get of the mark quicker than the 6.5 in my troopy.
In the scrub where you need that low down idle talk is where the 6.5 leaves them for dead

Yes mate, that sez it all. My former 100 Series TD GXL 'Cruiser was QUICK when it was wound up. It was scary to think that 2.5 tonnes of 4WD could go that fast. But,,,,,,,,,,when it came to low down grunt it wasn't as anywhere near as good as this Chev V8. The Chev, whilst it's no slouch, isn't real fast off the mark, but when I only use 3 gears - 2nd,3rd and 5th, I can set off in 2nd and hang onto it forever. That's where it's a lot quicker than most 4WDs 'cos I don't have to make that 1st to 2nd gear change.

Speedo reading is pretty normal for all cars now, I have owned new 4by's and 3
sedan vehicles in the past 4 years all read around 96k's at 100, current 4by is now spot on with the different tyres...

It was good to meet you and the missus at
Birdsville
You would have problems sitting in the cab of the ute. Is it comfortable enough though, apart from the knee thing? That is one reason I have never gone for a ute as my legs are always too long to sit comfortably in most utes.
Cheers

We had a 78 series GXL from Toyota for a couple of days to play with, what an engine don't know why they didn't make it a 4 speed.......(LOL) I found taking of in 1st gear was a waste of time when driving normal so I just used 2nd.
The engine has got bags of power and you don't relise how hard it goes in 3rd and 4th gear, you have to watch your speed.
Would of liked a better sound system and cruise control and maybe better seats even thou I could not fault them.
It's a fun thing to drive, never got a chance to try 4 wheel driving but I would say it would have to be very capable.
I enjoyed it more then our Hilux, but the other half said it was like a truck....I didn't think so.. but that could be a bloke thing!
Can't wait until the offer that engine in the Hilux's....dream...dream..
What fuel consumption did you get

My fuel consumption towing the van seemed to be almost exactly the same as a 100 series cruiser would get (not surprising seeing the engine output is the same):
Under no adverse conditions: 15mpg
Headwind, hills or sand: 12mpg
I make no apologies for being an mpg person.
BTW, around town I get 24mpg, on the highway at 100kph (strangely enough I'm not an mpH person) without the van it dropped to 21mpg and I blame its complete lack of any positive aerodynamics for this.
cheers

Re the Standard 79series (both V8 and the previous TD): I like all the features that are not on normal vehicles:
Cortina style airvents with the little knob in the middle
Quarter vent windows
NO cupholders
NO Console
NO squeazy doorpockets
NO chrome
NO mags
Vinyl floor
Steel dashboard, bumpers, sidesteps, not much plastic!
Wind up windows - if it hits your leg, turn it around
Roof gutters
A quality cassette player ;-).......just joking
No remotes
No immobiliser (at least on the 1HD-FTE)
No ABS, traction control or other brain-saving devices
A 4wd system that puts YOU in control. (Lock the hubs and pull the lever)
>1200kg payload or >1600kg payload with a spring upgrade
180litres standard
2 fuel filters as standard
You can see over the bonnet
Its a shame to see the chrome, fast glass and mags on the RV and GXLs, but heck, thats not a major downside
Regarding the price - its amusing that they can attract luxury car tax. But thats what people are willing to pay for all the above features that are rarely available on a new vehicle!
With my attitude, and being just over 50, I think I'm becoming an old fart ahead of time :-))
Cheers

I read these posts with interest because they are seem to be written as if this is an entirely new model and people seem to get confused between this and the 200 series.
The 200 series is an entirely new model(when released)
The Tray top is just the same model that has basically been around for 20 years with a new motor that happens to be a sincle turbo version of what will be in the 200 series.
I venture to guess the only reason they did this is because the old motor was non compliant with the emssion requirements and they were dropping the standard 105 series.

David,
I am cynical about Toyota's attitude because it is so obviously a stop gap vehicle. An all new workhorse type range will be out next year. Toyota could only bring out this diesel because of emission requirements but the new body is 12 months away.
I certainly don't have it confused with the 200 series.
This current 70 series range is casting pearls before swine.

What a great description 'casting pearls before swine'.
I appreciate it though, even if others don't.
I was thinking I might have a look for a second hand one late next year. If you are right and they bring out a new model by then, I might have to have a good look at that first, but knowing Toyota it won't be cheap.
