Hi there,

I am chasing around for a replacement gearbox for my 60 series Landcruiser. It is an 82 model, petrol (V8 Conversion) and 5 speed.

First Question:
The 5th gear is getting a bit noisy (whiney), but otherwise the gearbox has been reliable and fine. What is going on here... is it an economical repair/overhaul?

Secondly:
If I go down the path of replacing the gearbox I was looking at trying to pickup one in good condition as a replacement. I have heard of some 60 series boxes with a Vacuum engager for 4WD. Are these easily interchangeable with an earlier non-vacuum box? Is is just a case of making sure you get the switch/vacuum unit to install??

Many thanks for any advice.

Cheers,
Mark Krueger

Mark,
18 months ago it cost me $3600 for a gearbox/transfer case rebuiild, all bearings and parts out of spec were changed. Prior to this I towed our 21ft caravan in Fifth and when not towing the van, in the city I started off in second, after this experience I do neither.

I was previously told by a Toyota Gearbox Engineer that my cruiser could pull the van in fifth OK, so I could have overstrained the Gearbox, pulling the van in a headwind situation, but with a Turbo Diesel the cruiser did not seem to have problems.

I would get the problem fixed ASAP so unlike us, your vehicle does not let you down 2 days into a holiday and it and the caravan have to be transported back home and the holiday delayed for at least a week waiting for the rebuild job.
