Currently planning a trip from Melbourne to NT and Northern Queensland for later this year.

As usual, there's so much to do and see and so little time! So I'm seeking some advice. If there was a choice to be made, would people recommend Cobbold Gorge or Undara Lava Tubes?

Thanks in advanceMotley

Have heard good reports about Cobbold Gorge but never been there...

Tours at Undara were expensive and I didn't think the tubes were that fantastic but this is a personal preference thing. Camp ground was dry and dusty (typical though of this part of Oz) and had limited shade. Amenities were good. Firewood supplied. Friendly staff.

IMHO, Chillagoe Caves are much better value than Undara. Not sure if the QNPWS have reopened their campground there yet as its been 2 yrs since there last. If you wanted to do all caves at Chillagoe, I think you'd have to stay at least 2 days.

Rod the Chilligoe caves are indeed very nice. The 2 caves are the madona and the arch caves both well worth a look I am pretty sure you can do both in 1 day . I think from memory it was about $ 8 per person
All the best

Eric

You're probably right. Depends how many you want to do and how much you like caves. From memory there's also Trezkin (sp?) , Bauhina, Pompeii and the aboriginal cave art out near the dome mine. Kids (and big kids like me) typically like poking around the self guided caves like Bauhina and Pompeii. Not something you can do just anywhere these days.

Motley,
We are doing this trip in july/august this year.
Undara is only about 150kms from Cobbold Gorge.
I have been doing the planning and we will be coming from the Palmer River Goldfields south to Chilagoe Caves, then Undara (straight south), then onto Tallaroo Hot Springs, and Cobbold Gorge, returning through Einsleigh and Copperfield Gorge.
It is all within (relative short distances).

If you dont want to pay to see the Chillagoe caves there are a few of the smaller caves just off the main drag, just follow the tracks leading to the hills.
