Hi all.

Wondering if any body out there can help out with an intermittent auto transmission problem.

Occasionally....when I drive off, the transmission will change up to 3rd gear, and then hold in 3rd. With the gear selector in "D", and doing 80-85 kmh on the high way (at approx 3000 - 3200 rpm) the auto will NOT change in to the next gear. I can stop, select reverse ok, turn engine off, and wait 5 minutes, and then drive off, and the transmission will not change past third gear. I can select “D”, or “4” and the transmission will not change gear. I can select 2nd, and the transmission will change down (Not at 80 kmh in case your wondering), but when I change back to “D” and speed up, it will only change up to 3rd.

This will go on for a day (I only drive to and from work), and the next day it will operate OK.

It has done it to me 3 times in the past 6 weeks. No pattern to where/when/why, but the last 2 times has been after rainy days. (A clue possibly).

The Auto Trans shop which does the 4x4xMore dealerships work, has looked at it, and serviced it….with no fault found. Tells me it is hard to diagnose as these vehicles do not log fault codes, or data for the Auto Transmission.. No real help other than offering to use it for a month and hope it does it when he is driving.

Any body had any similar issues with the 5 speed Auto ??, How did you fix it, or who did you take it to ????
Any body recommends an Auto Trans specialist on south side of Brisbane (or any where in the Brisbane area….I would appreciate it.

Vehicle has done 160000 km and is a 2004 model. Very little off road.

Thanks Heaps.

Hello Simon,
I had intermittent problems with gear down change not happening. This was discussed in Thread 48892. You might want to check that out. Sounds like a job for the auto specialist. Good luck. Give us an update if you come up with some solutions.

Mine sometimes refuses to change down on a hill even when the pedal is down to the floor and revs down to 1500!!
Regards

Sounds like an electrical ad-hoc issue Simon..? Perhaps why you feel it is linked with times of rain. Your best point of call would be a reputable Toyota dealer, not an Auto Service house. Toyota dealers have access to a more complete knowledge base on various issues. I don't know the Brisbane dealer base however I can tell you this, I have had my wifes LC100 V8 serviced by many different people over some 260,000kms and I took it back to a genuine Toyota agent recently and asked them to go to town on it and it came back like the day it was new.! A good one is worth it's wait in gold.

Hi Simon, Possibility of it picking up moisture in a electrical fitting somewhere, can cause havoc in different areas.

Just a thought.

Cheers Axle.

Hi Simon,
I have a slight problem with mine when I am towing the caravan.
It will hold in 3rd but I just paddle the gear change across and back and it gives it a little reminder to change up.
I have no problem with it when not towing.
Hope this might help.
