Last night lying in my swag on the Diamantina River looking at the stars and milky way I fell asleep and when I woke up before moon up (about 1:00 a.m) I looked straight up and got the most awful fright. Directly above me but below the stars and milky way were about 27 Dementors from the Prison at Azkeban. I watched and watched to make sure they weren't coming for me and was ready with my Patronum Curse once I found my wand.
I woke Ian up who also saw them - although his explanation was simple - large very black long clouds - he'd never seen anything like it before. He doesn't understand about Dementors and didn't think the Patronum Curse would work (I knew it would).
And no, Willem, I had not been drinking Merlot - did have a couple of Jamesons in case of snake bite though.
Anyone else see these unusual clouds?

Gotta tell ya Harry, between you and JK Rawlings you got some serious imagination happening.! Harry, I know you are brave too but counting 27 dementors in the face of such a threat would have taken enormous courage. Perhaps "Dutch" gave you some help in both the imagination and courage department.?

Arrr, the curse, the curse, the curse......

You need to eat lots of strong good chocolate to rebuild your life force.

Tell Ian it is the only remedy.

And a bit more Irish whisky to help the chocolate go down.

Tell him Dumbledor says so.

Sorry Ruth, despite John's interpretation of TIC, mine is "Tongue In Cheek". Hope you understand that I was just being cheeky.

Good on you for having a good time out there.

Trevor, how come TIC isn't in the abbreviations I looked there - admittedly for something ruder than Tongue in Cheek. Should put it in there.

There seems to be no way of me adding this abbreviation to the list so I will MM David and see what comes from that.

Thanks for sending the rain my way also, lord knows we can do with it.

No way Stephen - I'm not the slighest bit scary as you know. But, I do have another photo to show you - it's the reason we went out to the camp spot. It has to do with performance of our new vehicles. I'm a bit fed up with people telling me to put chips in because performance isn't up to scratch - well I tell you, the ute performed really well on the rescue/tow job we had to perform (prior to the Dementor attack). Our mate in his big Hino truck with his sixth wheeler Macro luxury home/workshop made an error of judgement whilst finding a spot to camp on the Diamantina and spent 24 hours bogged (everything) - he rang us (on the sat phone) after 12 hours but we let him stew and dig a bit more before we went and towed him out - in various stages, I might add. He's terribly embarrassed about it all - we're still laughing and couldn't wait to get home to send the photos to his kids up north. Will post some photos on the Gallery if I can remember how to do it later on - after I help the old bloke with the cementing of the wheel track. The new fence is finished and looks terrific. Will post that as well - sure keeps the sand out. Very cold here again today. Ruth and Ian

Ruth

You do realize that the first two paragraphs are the opening of your first book?

However, we need a working title which I'm sure the guys will help you with. Something really creative like:

"Me, Ian and apparitions in the Outback".

Merlot creates "writers block". Jameson on the other hand is renown for it's creative ability to swell brain cells.

Unfortunately there is a re-birth of baby brain cells next morning, which is a painful experience. I always seek out a sympathy tree to hug after strong coffee in the morning.

LOL

Regards

Kim

Kim, trust you. Funnily enough the reason we were out there (see my reply to Gone Bush WA above) meant that I had coffee with my friend in her luxury Macro next morning whilst the boys were digging a bit more sand and after I told her about the Dementors (fully expecting her to tell me I was in need of help) she told me about a little boy on her school bus run - he's only in Grade 2 but loves Harry Potter and Dr Who etc. so I had another cup of coffee and wrote him a short story about the experience and Pauline will give it to him on the run next Monday.
About tree hugging. I was at the Ballyneety Rodeo (up at Lake Dunn between Aramac and Jericho - the long way) one May Long weekend in 1993 and partying after the rodeo on first day and prior to the campdraft on the second day. Apparently I drank a bottle of Scotch and danced like a wild woman - at some stage I was dancing with a well known Boss Drover (so it said in the Qld COuntry Life the other day) and we had linked hands around this beautiful gum tree and were dancing with it. AT the same time on of our neighbours - also well known and respected Council man who had partaken of a lot of Rum flew off the top of the bar roof because he thought he was Superman, landing on one of the twin girls also partying and broke her arm. Later that night when everyone went to camp I woke up with terrible seasickness - my bed was REALLY rocking (you know what I mean, from the grog usually) and staggered outside the caravan to find that the wind had come up really strongly and the waves were washing over the base of the caravan becaue we'd camped on the banks of Lake Dunn and the wind had pushed the water over our side. So back to bed I went and when I finally managed to sit up and drink my tea next morning without throwing up into the 'ocean' I discovered that the well known and respected neighbour who had flown off the roof as Superman had rolled into his swag under the front of the van to get away from the wind and he was floating in Lake Dunn. He eventually was rescued and rode in the campdraft which I didn't get to see because I was too ill. Haven't had a session as bad as that since then. Thanks for reminding me of that good memory Kim - I couldn't work for a wekk but gee, it was such good fun.

Ruth

I'm serious. Write a book!

The larrikinism and stories of the bush are becoming lost in time, and not being recorded as they should be.

If you don't do this, I'll have to report your Goanna oil still to the coppers....!

LOL

"Last night lying in my swag on the Diamantina River looking at the stars and milky way I fell asleep and when............."

Geeeee.... you know how to make a bloke envious Ruth don't you.. My bride and I (and probably 2/3's of the rest of the ExplorOz population) would absolutely LOVE to be seeing "dementors" on the banks of the Diamantina!!!

And yes, I agree with others that you have the makings of good bush yarns there...... why not get it into print, at least just to "pass-it-on" for future generations!

Cheers

Brian
