I have been researching installing a chip to my common rail 3 litre TD Patrol.
A recent conversation with a supplier of such a chip has lead me to adding this thread.
After explaining I was looking to improve the KW and Torque using the chip (Cost of approx $1450) for towing reasons (Beach work) I was informed that I should add a few other components such as an intercooler fan ,Turbo boost controller before installing the chip and also change to a larger exhaust.
Overall cost is approx $3700 - $4000
The explanation was that the Nissan engine has issues keeping the boost at a set range and also with poor cooling of the intercooler.
That said my question of anyone knows the Engine is does the above sound correct and is the cost reasonable?

hello Colinf, we have a DP chip in our Hilux, best money ever spent.
With the Nissan why not call DP and ask them, of course anything will go better with more mods but you only wanted the chip.
I think you may be doing more for there finances then the benifit you will get, I would get a second opinion.
Most chip makers will not supply a chip that will do damage to your engine let alone sell a chip that needs other things added to make it work.
I still think they were more looking out for them selves then your intrests.

Colinf,
Jump onto the patrol4x4.com website and do a search as this has been asked on there.
I even asked on there about the chip as I was looking at the same thing. You will get some great info there.
Cheers Greg

Keep the $4000 and put it towards replaceing the motor when it blows up.

Gooday Colinf
like you, I was a little disappointed with the performance of my recently purchased 3.0l litre patrol in sand (last patrol was TD42). (Intercooler is as mush use as teats on a bull at low speed in sand)
Fitted an intercooler fan, couple of hours work and around $120 & added a Steinbauer P-Box @$1380. Absolutely transformed the vehicle. Just returned from northern Simpson and am stoked with its performance.
For the DIY intercooler fan I installed see this guy's site -

Have to agree Stevo, the best cheap mod would be a intercooler fan.
Top mounted intercoolers and bad for heat soak, when travelling slow there is not enough ram air going through the fins plus heat from the engine riises upwards into the intercooler.
Basicly they start to work backwards by putting heat into the air charge instead of taking it out.

Richard, interesting term "heat soak". At low speed in heavy sand the intercooler body was very hot to touch prior to the installation of the fan. Now, the temperature of the body remains at ambient temperature, even at prolonged speeds of 5 to 10 kmh. I'm sure my fuel consumption has decreased at low speeds but have nothing to compare.
Finke to Jervois via
Madigan Line &
Hay River plus few deviations such as the oval & caroline ( much of the trip at low speeds ie 8 hrs @ 5km/h, 16 hrs @ 10 to 25 km/hr) used 163 litres - Is anybody able to give me a comparison for a 3 litre Patrol on this trip without intercooler fan ?? (I do realise there are far more influencing variables than just a fan !!)

hello Colin
i have a GUiii with 3ltr and a dp chip. i have also just purchased a tipan 3" exhaust which is not yet fitted. i have dine 100,000km and about 35,000 of these were off road. i also tow a TVan and after fitting the chip i noticed a large difference in power. i have purchased the exhaust to allow me to turn the chip up higher. with the exhaust fitted it allows you to run more power and still maintain the standard exhaust temperatures. some people will tell you that you need a boost control but this was with the early models. if you have never had the check engine light come on then you don't have the problem, the only engine that had these problems was the very first 3Ltr which was sold for less than a year,
