G'day all, just wanted to use the
forum to thank some people who stopped to assist us when BIG DOG broke down & caught fire 12 K's nth of
Oodnadatta, we had a wheel bearing collapse & catch fire & my wife dislocated her ankle quite badly while getting our disabled daughter out of the cab.
These people stopped & went out of their way to ensure we were all fine & assisted us in getting into Oodna.
Mark Howden, Pat Smith, Trevor & Garry Lovell, Peter Rumbelow, Jim Trenerry, Dr Richard & Alistair Laycock & Lin Green.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
We are home now but BIG DOG is still at Oodna await repairs before I can head back out to get it home.
I'm sorry if I offend anyone by posting this, we had helped a number of travellers while in the Kimberly with tyre & elec troubles but never thought we be the recipients of such.

Sorry to read about your fire Rod; glad you are all OK, and it sounds like your BIG DOG survived and is repairable. Hope your wife's ankle is mending
well - she will need to treat it with caution it for quite some time. How did you extinguish the fire?
Also glad to read that people still do stop and help. We had a Landcruiser catch on fire (wiring in dashboard) some years ago, and no-one stopped until a car load of youngsters on their way to a party. They saved our vehicle by sacrificing their beer. It was still quite expensive repairs - paid by insurance, but came close to losing the whole vehicle. When in the outback, we have found the locals just wonderful.

Yeah the truck is OK, it will be repaired & then we'll head out & bring it home.
Before we left & after reading about other peoples close calls with fires I bought a 2 lts pump bottle that you use to spray the garden, kept it full & handy for just this reason. I had to fill it 6 times to ensure the fire was out, powder extinguishers would have been of no use as it needed to be cooled not suffacated.
So for a couple of bucks I saved it from being an expensive total loss.
Thanks.

Well done Rod in being so
well prepared. We carry small fire extinguishers in the car and caravan, but i understand they only last for a few seconds anyway, hence from our experience i recommend people carry a slab of beer!

Hi Rod,
Glad to be able to help. We hope that Sue is recovering
well - that will be a long haul.
If you pass through
Adelaide when picking up BIG DOG give us a bell. I'll ring a phone number through to you.
We had a great trip across the Simpson only to find the
Birdsville Races had no horses.
Keep
well pal
Peter

G'day Peter,
Sue if recovering fine, she will be in plaster for another 4 weeks, she is not allowed to weight bare at all so is confined to a wheelchair like Lorrin, I have to make up a little roadtrain just to check the mail ;-))
Glad you had a good trip across
the desert.
