chasing comments on the 3.0 litre nissan patrol as a tourer compared to a 4.2. Will a chip in the 3.0 lift it's appeal.

Fair dinkum, you's bloke are knockers!!! The 3 litre is a very sound investment; just look at the Nissan performance printouts.... they produce more power and torque than the old-fashioned 4.2TD. Jeez, I wish _I_ had one of this beautiful machines......

If you do a search on 3lt Patrol problems on this site you will be enlightened. Having said that we have one at work that has done 80000ks with no problems and you know how hire cars get treated

Do a search for 3.0 litre Patrol problems on this
forum - or any other 4wd
forum, then make your own mind up. The problems are
well know and the topic has been thrashed to death many times on this
forum, hence the earlier replies.

Despite what you will read about the 3.0 TD
mine has been flawless. Yes it is a 2003 GU III model, so past the early time bombs, and I have just clocked over 150 kms with not an issue to be seen.
Has never been to Nissan for a service. Air / oil / fuel done by myself and anything else that needed or needs doing is taken to a trusted mechanic.
I always read so much about the issues, but with the amount of them on the road I think you would have to be pretty unlucky especially with one of the later year models.

I'll second that Richard. Ours is 2002 on 127,000, and is the most reliable and comfortable vehicle we have had. Is only reluctantly for sale because we have now purchased the F250 to tow our Bushtracker with. We have followed the book with Nissan servicing.

The 3.0ltr is a great tourer but after just returning from the Gulf towing a camptrailer tinnie etc for 15000kls comes the repair billl.
Mine is a 2003 GU 113000kls serviced on the dot with Nissan parts but on this trip back spring hanger collapsed, radiator is leaking, new belt tensioner fitted and oil is still leaking from the front rhs (they want $1500 to fix that).
Have just traded it on a GXL Prado and hope it lasts till the new bus arrives
The repair bills to date $3500

Juardo - I think the trick with the 3.0TD is to keep them under warranty. A little while ago 4WD Monthly did a comparo on the Patrols - the 3.0TD, the 4.2 and the 4.8 V8. The 3.0TD was voted as the best day to day drive/tourer and the 4.2 as the best off road. A gas diesel conversion could
well see the 4.2 gain a clear lead. Check 'em out and make your own call.
http://www.dieselgasaustralia.com.au/default.aspx?ID=Vehicles
or get a copy of the lastest 4WD monthly.

Do they seriously expect us to believe that a stock standard 4.2 GU has it over a 4.8 auto off road ???
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA !!!!!!!
Makes me even happier knowing I stopped wasting my money on them !
Cheers

Hey Pezza - the 4.8 was the obvious choice for fuel refinery owners...... but for the rest of us who don't get a buzz from watching the fuel guage drop with every stab of the throttle, the others pose a more affordable day to day drive. That said, the Patrol is an awesome beast - if only the Nissan would enlighten us with an awesome new age engine ...... ahhhhhh, we can only dream......
