Andrew,

I bought my 40ltr 1 year ago from Gladstone Aircond and refrigeration in QLD. At the time i think rrp was $1180 and i ended up paying $1050 with a little bartering. From memory all distribtuors have to sell at recommended rrp, i think i was quite fortunate to get the discount.
Hope this helps

Why not buy a quality Australian made fridge that has sufficient insulation for Australian conditions. Evakool, Explorer, Autofridge, Trailblazer.

Engel chest fridge are at best rated to 32C and carry no CEN certification. In temperatures over 32C Engel take a substantial amount of power to try to keep the fridge at the required temperature. The only fridge of Engel that carries a CEN N certification is the upright fridge. An N rating is most definitely not suitable for Australian conditions. Fridges for Australian conditions need to carry a T certification rating.

Engel cycles over the Australian standards for refrigeration and does not meet the standards to maintain temperature within 4C as tested by a NATA approved lab.
If you look at the SawaFuji factory website specifications you will see they do not quote the required temperature operating range or the CEN rating. http://www.sawafuji.co.jp/engel/htm/engel-sp.htm

Have you priced the spares for an Engel when it breaks down compared to other brands. Suggest you check out what a compressor and invertor unit costs to replace.

firstly it has to break down. Invariably some do but I know plenty of people here in the Pilbara & Kimberley who've had theirs for untold years without any problems whatsoever. The trick is to keep using them I reckon. As for the 32C bit well that's a winters day for us and that's when I do most of my camping so perhaps that's the secret.

so larking , your technical knowledge seems impressive , but from andrew's post I understand he's decided on the product and simply desires to know the best place to - BUY IT ! I did in 1992 never a problem in all conditions and still going strong.

I think you'd be right there BJ.

I live in country WA ( about 4.5hrs from Perth). Not sure if we have had the 4x4 show or not this year yet, but I'll check it out.

ARB Albany are doing them for $1150. Another place around the corner is doing the Engel with the bag for $1250. I think the're pretty much the same everywhere.

cheers
