We are thinking to check out Pormpuraaw on the way to the Cape. Anybody been there? Is it worth 450km extra to spend a day or two??

cheers

I looked at going there back in 1999 when we did our trip. My plan was to go in to Kownyama and then on up to Pormpuraaw. Unfortunately the Mitchell River was about 100km wide at the time so my plans had to be modified.

I did contact the local administrator in Kowanyama who was very keen to get visitors. He was the one who informed me of the difficulty the river might pose. I wanted to see it for the difference in scenery compared to the east coast. It did sound interesting.

By going in from the south and visiting both communities it becomes a through trip. I always prefer not to retrace my steps.

It would be worth finding a phone number and making a call.

There a few years ago - Contact the local admin and ask to see if you can see the crocs being fed. (If they are doing it still)

Came back from there about 6 weeks ago. Great spot if you have a tinnie with you. At this stage you cant go into the croc farm anymore but possibly in the future.Check the alcoholl regs as it is only a 6 pack you are allowed now!!!!
