Hi All,
My mate is considering buying one of the above mentioned cars in the ST-X Dual cab model. The main purpose is to tow a 2.5t plate ally boat (has a 4.2 turbo diesel GQ for real off road). Has anyone out there had proven towing ability. He is fully set up with air operate trailer brakes(sensor brake). Also what sort of fuel returns did you achieve for towing around this weight. Thanks for your time
Matt

Towing a big boat around like that will only give you 450-500Km's out of a
tank versus say 650 without the boat at a guess. Towing will be steady and fairly comfortable.

I cant see the purpose in going to the Navara D40 TD as a towing rig when the engine is very laggy in manual form and with the auto it will rev its tits off for no reason when it would be far better to change up.
The petrol auto with 198kw would be a far better bet for pulling a decent sized boat, it is thirsty, but will never be found wanting. The company I work for has tri-axle 2.6 tonne promotional trailers and recently experimented with the base model navara 2.5TD auto (ST?????) and it was a pain on hills and maintaining speed even on gentle inclines. Even from a set of traffic lights on level ground it annoyed the hell out of me as it would rev straight to 3500 rpm before changing, as for having 400Nm of torque at 2000rpm it either doesent or doesnt know how to use them. Only by using the tiptronic override could any sense of normality could be attained and at highway speeds it loses momentum very quickly and will click back to third and some 4000rpm on roads that my unmodified 2.8TD GU will accelerate up in fifth. I feel that such a highly stressed motor will either have a very short life and will be soon exhibiting typical Nissan 4cylinder TD traits..........bang!
To do all this revving it came it around 17ltrs consistentantly, the boss got the $hits up with it and a month ago an order was placed for a V8 TD GX cruiser trayback :) :)
Pity the Mitsu Triton 3.2DID can only tow 2.25 tonne as this motor has got torque from tickover (for a little motor) but a not as strong top end.

gday,
ive just towed a 3t trailer for 1600 k,s with my MANUAL navara and it towed fine. i sat on 100-115k's all day (except for the hills, and yes, i know that this is a bit quick, so save your comments on this)
due to the speed and the size of the trailer, the economy wasnt very good at all (about 17-20l per 100k's), but i dont think anything would be much better except for maybe an f truck.
BUT im very happy with the navara d40, its the first diesel and the first jap car i have ever owned.
while we are on the subject, what rpm should i be towing at? it seems to make the bulk of its tq at about 2000rpm. any hints.
cheers, justin.
