The sub tank light is not going on when I switch to the sub tank.

Is this indicative of a blown globe or LED behind the dash, or is it that the switchover relays are not working?

I think that the guage is switching over as the levels in the tanks are different and it moves, but I am concerned that the relays might be stuck.

Cheers
Andrew.

Andrew,
mine does the same. It does switch over however the light does not come on. I think it may be the bulb.

If your gauge is showing different levels then it is definately switching over. Can also try operating the switch without the engine running with ignition on and you will hear it click over.

G'Day Andrew,

Mine has been the same since I bought it and as Tom said above it still switches the actual tanks over. You can tell by looking at the sub tank button whether its in or out and hence whether your on the sub or main. As said it was like it when I got it so don't know what I'm missing and hence haven't bothered trying to fix it.

I had the same thing a few years ago. The problem was not the bulb but the fuse for the whole instrument cluster, Toyota changed it under warranty and said it was a common problem.

i also had mine replaced (cluster)as mine did not change state when button was pressed,i found out that in a certain VIN range(about 4000 odd cruisers)had the wrong sender and was not matched to the cluster,as a result after some time it burnt the cluster out, toyota installed a patch harness in line with the existing loom to the new cluster to give the correct resistance to limit current and problem solved.cheers Paul

Me too, but wasn't faulty globe, relay or fuse. According to Toyota dealer it was caused by the fuel guage being faulty - something to do with wiring. Apparently you cannot replace the guage itself, so the entire instrument panel was replaced with a new one. I might add, Toyota wouldn't come to the party and replace under warranty. They determined it could be fixed under what they refer to as a Customer Satisfaction Agreement. The long and short to that is, you must agree to pay 50% towards the labour costs...! I did and guess you might say it was much cheaper than what the alternative may have been.

mine does the same but is only the globe. as long as you know that when button is in the sub is on, there should be no major concern. i think toyota just after an easy buck any chance they get.

Hi Andrew (was just about to log off)
Yes the main tank was working, but was driving on Sub tank which indicated as being half full. Without any warning whatsoever (no cough/splutter from air sucked into fuel line) the Cruiser silently died. Lucky it didn't happen in traffic (ever tried pushing a TD100 on your own!) I was only 100m from home.
In hindsight I probably should have re-primed the fuel line, but didn't - Why should I...it was showing half full. Switched it back to main tank and cranked it over a few times and it fired back up. Needless to say I was kind of cranky when I finally got into the driveway and rang Toyota straight away. I was due to head off on a trip within 3 weeks.
A good starting point, as Toytruck suggested. You should be able to hear the relay click over in back of the vehicle.
Good luck with it, I know I pulled out a few hairs worrying about it at the time.
Cheers
Leigh

I can hear the relays working so I guess it is just another character quality of the old truck.

Cheers

Mine was simple fix as it was just the globe.

Went to Toyota and a globe was $8 which comes in the little plastic fitting.

Went to Dick Smith ad picked up Globe only for 23 cents. As I had about 4 globes to replace throughout the dash (and 2 spare globes) I saved myself over $46 by not buying from Toyota.

From reading other forums it is common for the globes to blow after 10 years or so.
