With hard drives having reached sizes of huge proportions it is easy to forget where things are located, this programme provides an excellent search facility to help you find that long lost file. It has some quite complex search facilities (regular expressions) but it also has some basic one for non computer people.

Yep - Windows search, especially the super-fast Vista search seems to work pretty well for me.

Mike,

Thanks for that. I found it was a big improvment on Windows Search. I typed in some pretty obscure terms that I knew were WITHIN a few .doc files. It found 'em within seconds. Win Search seems only to search the titles of files.

I typed in "Steve Fossett" but even it couldn't find him either,,,,,,,,

Sorry but I couldn't resist it,,,,,,,,

'.....WIN Search seems only to search the titles of files' Computers are pretty clever things, however they can only find things that have names i.e. file names. You can of course use 'wild cards' such as the asterisk * (SHIFT 8) after or before a partial name. For example, to search for a file with the word holiday in it (presuming you don't know the rest of the name) you could enter *holiday* and the result should return all file names with the word holiday in it. Search can also recover files by type. For example if you want to find all files created in Word but don't know the exact name of the file you can enter *.doc and it will find every DOC (document) file on your computer.
One of the most important things with filing on your computer is to imagine the Hard Drive(s) as being a filing cabinet. Each Folder is similar to a file/folder in a filing cabinet storage system. You can create folders for anything you want. You can have a 'master folder' perhaps called Holiday under which you can create sub-folders with headings such as Vehicle, Equipment, Spares, Photographs, etc. etc. The better you are at organising your files, the easier it will be for you to find/recover something in the future. Don't forget that you can also give your files meaningful names so that they can be recovered more easily. Hope that's of some help.

DIO,

That's the problem with my PC filing system - I haven't got one. I save something and, days later I can't remember what I called it.

BUT I can recall some of the words that were in it. That's why Mikes' little routine is so good.

Hi Mike,
Great find.
Anything that unleashes "grep" into windows has got to be a good thing!
Ahh, Unix. Operating System for adults!

Tidieness is next to godliness my mum used to say and it applies to computers as well.
My machine has over 500,000 files in it in 750gig of HDD space so without being tidy I wouldnt find anything.
And none of them are naughty pics either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
