hi,we had a traffic highway policeman do a talk at one of our meetings, end result-sell your 4x4-cannot modify it in any way to make it off road capable.15 mm higher tyres-no wider. 50 mm body or suspension lift, not both.i came to the conclusion that i have to find an off road vehicle that i dont need to modify-unimog-is the only one worth getting.look them up and dream.but as off now i own,as u might know,1982 bronco 220 hp, 454 nm tourqe, lsd front & rear[that work mr toyota].let down, ifs, but still shows most 4x4s up.seeing that i cant be biast,i think a detroit soft locker is the thing i will buy far front & rear diffs as they allow turning,no switches or cables to get hung up.tyres ive chosen are m/thomson mtz,36/15.5/16.very nice[but not to mr highway man].also found 1200lb winches far $600+ in melbourne, like everything these days, same as others made in china.awell by far now as spalding is coming up,nth of clare,s.a.

Tell him to get his facts straight. You can legally increase the diameter on 4x4 tyres up to 50mm above the manufacturers standard size as listed on the tyre placard. Width is not a problem as long as the tyres are within the guards (up to 75mm flares allowed) and do not contact any body/suspension components throughout the suspension and steering full travel subject to certain increase in track measurements. If you want to read more refer to the Light Vehicle National Code of Practice on the website: www.dotars.gov.au

I'll have to get Doug T to have a look at this. It's worse than the monologue in James Joyce's 'Ullyses.

All states are different, what you can do in one state you can't do in another. The only way you can find the real answer, is to go to the DOT in your state and they will give you all the answers on modifications.

The Light Vehicle National Code of Practice is just that: "National" and is administered by the Department of Transport and Regional Services in Canberra and applies in all States. Federal legislation over rides States legislation.

Yes that is correct, but states use it as a guide only and alter it any way they see fit. The closest code that is used Australia wide is the trucking industry.

It will be a great day when all the states stop fighting and introduce a common code of practice.

Similar to the National Gun Laws, but states have certain 'other' requirements. You can comply to the national laws, but if you don't to a state addition, you're stuffed under their law.

Police officers are not legal experts - by a long shot and any advice given by them should be treated with extreme caution.

Your comment 50mm lift, 50mm body, 36"x15.5 tyres, no probs with power raises an interesting point. Sure you may have plenty of power but in a life or death situation where you have to take extreme evasive action your chances of a roll over increase dramatically with a 100mm increase in your COG. With an increase in the diameter of your tyres of that magnitude your braking efficiency would be reduced as well. The rig may "look good" but the rules with regard to modifications are backed by sound engineering methodology and you are exposing yourself to litigation in an accident situation as well as voiding your comprehensive and third party insurance cover.
