I'm looking at buying a
UHF radio. Does anyone still use AM? The Uniden UH095SX is combined UHF, AM and scanner for a little more $$$ above a standard UHF unit.
Is there a use of a scanner nowadays since the police etc. have gone digital?

I haven't used my 27 meg for 5 years. Give it a miss and get a GME
UHF radio. Good products,Aussie made.

I used to have the previous model the UH-090 with both AM and UHF. In the 6 years I had it, all I heard were our neighbours to the North - mainly Asian fisherman. Then I discovered the Icom and will never go to a Uniden again.
I originally had both an AM set (Pro 640e) and UHF set (UH-077) through the 90's due to having some of the older members of our old 4wd club having AM only sets. That way I could relay convoy chatter. Then I upgraded to the UH-090 but moved clubs and the AM side never got used after that.
Regards
David

Hi ben_gv3
I would have some reservations on just how good it would be, as the UHF and the AM use two different frequencies and antenna set ups.
Years ago, I used AM and SSB units but not a patch compared to UHF for voice quality.
If you are after reliable long distance radio reception, then HF is the only way to go.
Cheers
Stephen

I read on earlier posts that sometimes groups travelling together use AM to avoid the clutter on the UHF network.
It could be useful to have both UHF and AM if you knew people with AM.

Few of my mates and I run both AM and UHF. AM is handy when trying to hold a conversation when UHF is clogged with imbeciles on most channels (usually only an issue in larger built up areas). But for most of the time, UHF will be enough.
