Have a friend who's thinking of purchasing a new Prado diesel. He has recently come across some disturbing reports Link to Prado stress cracks that some owners have found cracks on the front end body work (guards) of their vehicles. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Hi there DIO, that looks pretty serious, I wonder what model there talking about ??? They say 02 but that could be 120 or the older 95 series as the 120 came out in that year as well. Regards Steve M

I wouldn't be overly worried about it. It is more a cosmetic problem which has happened to some Prados.
This is more attributed to the suspension combo they have been running...

Heard the same on another forum, but have never heard of it or seen it before.

The vehicle may of been in a accident at some stage of it's life.

Some one said it may be caused by the bull bar, i find this hard to believe as the bull bar is mounted to the chassie and not the body.

I don't thinkit would be anything serious as if it was a saftey issue Toyota would of addresses it by now as they did with the 100 series Landcuiser.

We have a 120 series 2004 Turbo diesel.

I have managed to hit a few of the dips on the Weipa to Laura road pretty hard including one that had a missing sign post and we hit it at near 80km/h at 4am (dark and raining) with a 2 tom trailer on back. If ANYTHING ws going to cause that sort of damage then that would have been it!

No sign of any sort of creasing or cracking as yet. I checked it out pretty closely as soon as I saw those photos on a Prado forum last year!

I think it would only be from extreme abuse.

Cheers

You don't get cracks like that from hitting one or two dips, They are fatigue cracks that form over time from constant flexing.
Contrary to what the Toyota marketing people want you to believe, they are just like any other 4wd, you give them a hard time and things break, or crack in this case.

A buying 2nd hand report in 4wd monthly last year said to also watch out for busted radiator mounts along with body cracks on those models with bullbars??? Apparently they go hand in hand. I doubt this info would be printed if there wasn't any substance to it.

To all those who took the time to respond to my question, I have passed the results onto my friend who has now changed his thinking and is apparently keen on a Pajero. Thanks for your help.
