Hi,
We have been very dissappointed with the performance of our Cooper AT tyres. We have run them at the right pressure and got them rotated every 10,000 and they have not lasted 35,000km.
We had Coopers on our Challenger but sold the car before the tyres reached 30,000. If we had known then that they wouldn't last we probably would not have had them fitted to our new
Pajero. My question is - what are good tyres? We do a bit of off roading mainly to the Cape and back and we tow a Cape York trailer. Any opinions would be appreciated as we thought we were buying the best.
Thanks

BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A are the only REAL All Terrain. Coopers 'warranty' isn't worth the ink used to print it. I got 88000 out of last set of BFG's, 14000 out of current and the rubber nodules only just starting to go. Run at 42 psi rear and 40 psi front and they still wear evenly, ride is a bit rough but the patrol needs every bit of cornering ability it can get.

Have tried them softer but handles like a sack of $hit....personal preference. they are 285/75R16 (33")

Bag of worms about to get thrown me thinks.

You might also want to look at Goodyear MTR's.
I have run mine for 70,000 and there's probably another 10k or more left. I run 45 rear 38 to 42 front and the ride is great.
I think from memory they are 1mm thicker on the side walls than that other brand, escapes me at the moment B somethings I think.
Anyway, do your research and the choice is yours .
Just priced new ones last week for $285 fitted & balanced.(265's)
I'll grab those and put away before they change their minds.
A group of very offroaders I know travelled through some pretty rough stuff last month and they had 29 punctures between them . Only 1 vehicle got through unscathed and guess what he was running ..........MTR's :>))
Probably tail end charlie. Still....

G'day Harry
In the tyre test link the Goodyears did not do so well for punture resistance, maybe the guy with no punctures in his MTR's got his pressures well sorted for the job at hand.

I often have to help other club members fix puntures but, touch wood, I am still yet to fix one for myself. Maybe because I always carry two spares, that Murphy and his law has not caught me yet????

Colin.

gawd.. another poor sap that believes 4wd magazines who survive only on sponsors who they cant offend.

fwiw, I have scorpions on the pathfinder, and they are bleep , yet they "WON" one magazines tests...

I have 240 Lightforces which WON one magazines "TESTS" followed by pages of ads and win a set, yet the other magazine said they were poo, and the ones that did win, came last in the other magazine test.. followed by pages of ads from the winner etc etc.

dont believe everything you read..

4wd monthly did an AT tyre test.

Have a look if you are looking at AT tyres.

G'day stoodsam
I would be looking at other factors before deciding on ANY replacement tyre. That sort of mileage is very unusual. My Cooper ATR's have more than 50% life with close to 40000 on them!!!!

Have you had an alignment done? was the tyre wear even? what sort of driving have you done during their life? Did a previous tyre perform better on your car under the same conditions? do you run correct pressures (not necessarily recommended)?

All these and a million more factors could have an influence on tyre wear, and you need to be sure you are not just replacing the tyres for another 35000km of exessive wear.

"Any opinions would be appreciated as we thought we were buying the best".

There is no such thing as the best tyre, the best you can hope for is the correct tyre for you.

My rig shows my cars tyres clearly near some deep potholes and the Coopers in that pic had 25000km on them.

None of that alters the fact that there are more complaints about Cooper tyres, than any others on this forum.

a cooper rep actually admitted that there tyres perform and wear better in certain parts of our large playground, but wouldnt specify which and where.do your homework and pick what you think is best ,hopefully get it right and not spend the next 70,000km thinking you should have got something else.

the problem with coopers is that they are made in usa to usa road conditions coopers warrenty also states that you must run the rite pressure, rotation, ballance and wheel alighnment every 5000klms as for the rite pressure well what is the rite pressure as every tyre is differnt and sits on the road differnt

cheers shane

I had Cooper A/Ts on the Prado and got 30,000 out of them before trading them in (a bit over 1/2 worn) for Cooper ATRs which have near 40,000 on and are about 1/3 worn. ATRs much better than the A/T.

Also have a set of Goodyear MTRs on other rims and they are fantastic. Not too bad on-road (not as good as CoopersATR) but off-road or on dirt roads they leave to Coopers for dead.

Horses for courses but if you do a lot of dirt/off road work then the MTR are a great all-rounder biased towards off-road.

Cheers

Hi Truckster,

No we have not called Coopers. The guys at Tyrepower where we bought them couldn't care less. Too bad so sad!! As an agent for Coopers I thought it would be their job and good customer service.
