There has been a few queries on the
forum regarding which HF network to use. Some contributors have suggested to '
shop around' for the best price!! However, this may not be the best value-for- money. The best way to '
shop around' would be to listen out, for a period of time, to the available networks. Check out which network provides the best & efficient service to suit your needs. The best service may or may not be the cheapest.
Find out the frequencies & sched. times and have a listen. That'll cost you nothing.
The networks I am aware of are:
HF Radio Club- instigated & mainly aimed at the CMCA (Campervans & motorhomes) however available to all- with bases at Casino, Cooladdi,
Albany,
Woomera,
Derby & Cowra. Have RadPhone facilites.
VKS737- Australian National 4WD Radio Network-Sched bases at
Adelaide,
Alice Springs, Charters Toers,
Derby, Pert, St Marys (Tas), and support bases at
Cairns,
Darwin,
Newcastle &
Swan Hill.
Radphone facilites through Radtel.
VMS469-Reids. Bases at
Derby, Charters Towers,
Brisbane, Cowra,
Adelaide &
Woomera. Radphone facilities.
As with most things in life- there's more to a product than just price!!

You should mention what you intend doing, i.e. extended travel around Australia, short trips, extended stays in one place, remote areas travel, etc. All have a bearing on which service suite you best
Cheers
ps. I use VKS 737

I would think that the small fact that VKS is the largest service provider must say something for what they do.
I have found VKS and its base station operators to be bloody terrific and really enhance my trip.
Thanks guys.

As I have replied in the past, I am very one sided towards VKS 737 Radio Network. When we have been bush, I have never heard the other non VKS bases on air, with their members trying to make contact with the VKS Bases.
I would have been a member for over 13 years if it wasn't good.
The Base operators are a top bunch of people and always there when you need then.
Cheers Stephen

Hi Stephen
You're preaching to the converted here!!!
The post was aimed at some queries last week.
I feel sure after a short time of monitoring the various Networks- it won't be too hard to establish which one is the most helpful & relevant to Exploring Oz...
