Hi folks just got the renewal from NRMA for my 1999 caravan. On close inspection I found "ANNEXE: No annexe insured". Now I've had the annexe since I bought the van and thought that it was always part of the insured item. A check of last year's policy document revealed "ANNEXE: 1999 canvas" "agreed value Annexe: $1,020" So, to the product Disclosure Statement (PDS as we all now know them, but how many of us have actually read them) page 23 "However - we will not cover any canvas, vinyl or fabric annexe that is more than eight years old"!!! So, despite the fact it's only been used for a total of about 16 weeks in its whole life, it is automatically uninsurable. I can't help but wonder how many people are out there confident that their annexe is insured when in fact it is not! I wonder is my roll-out awning part of the insured caravan or the uninsured annexe. Has anyone had this experience with other insurers or is this a one off for NRMA?

Tessa,
Yes was aware that NRMA had this rule re canvas.
in fact they dont even insure camper trailers because they have canvas tops.
Try QBE.
I have all my insurance with NRMA except for CT but they werent interested so I found QBE very obliging and price competitive.
cheers
Howard

Howard,

"in fact they dont even insure camper trailers because they have canvas tops"

I dont know why you were told that, because NRMA do insure camper trailers.

I have had 2 campers, 1 x soft floor and 1 x hard floor and both were insured by NRMA without any problems at all.

I was told that by the man on the end of the quote line at NRMA insurance a few years ago when I purchased my camper trailer.
maybe I got the new boy on the help desk and he didnt know s**t from clay.
as mentioned i have about 10 policies with NRMA between vehicles ,house , contents, boat etc and they were my first point of call .
end result is i went elsewhere and am happy with policy from QBE.

Was there a reduction in the premium as the annexe was no longer covered and if not - why not?

Just renewed our caravan insurance today. Annexe has to be specified, and an extra paid, only about $20. Awning is covered under the caravan as it is attached to the van. Nav.

It actually gets worse than that Terry. If you write your caravan off and decide to replace it with another model altogether, they will reimburse you for the value of the van only, but not the annexe even though it was insured with the van. You're stuck with an annexe that (probably) won't fit your next van. Their answer is that your annexe wasn't damaged (if, of course that was the case) and therefore doesn't need replacing.
