Evening folks,

New member here.

We drive a Prado 120 TD Auto and Marilyn and I are in market for serious offroad van or camper trailer, and presently leaning towards a Kimberley Karavan. They seem very rugged and well thought out but have heard a couple of bad stories re suspension failures and dust ingress.

I think a few members have these units so would be really keen to get feedback on how they have handled the really long and rugged stuff.

We are looking to take off mid 2008 on the iconic trip around the paddock.

Cheers and thanks in anticipation.

Maybe DIO thought he was referring to dust and suspension failure in the Prado .

Philip , we have a couple of rabid KKK owners here , who I am sure will give you plenty of feed back when they see your post .

I think I would have bought one , except for the fact that I want to get out of my car and step straight into my "house". For that reason , I am ordering a 15 ft Phoenix Scorpion . Not as good on bad tracks as the KKK , but if I need to go to bad spots , I swag it anyway .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Phil & Marilyn.
Not yet a Kimberly Karavan owner but it’s due in 3.5 weeks (7th Oct.). I’m bringing one into NZ via the NZ agent in Christchurch. Did a lot of research before deciding to buy including a visit to the factory in Ballina and a couple of camping shows in QLD. Dust and insects might have been a small problem in early models when the top was up owing to the gap between the upper and lower sections. This area now has an extra rubber seal fitted and looks much more secure. The suspension system is the same as the Kimberly Kamper I believe, and as such is a long standing proven system. However nothing is unbreakable. It’s like dust proofing, 98% might be achievable but 100% is probably a myth. All in all the Karavan looks like a great product, a compact, mobile luxury apartment even. The price is enough to make you weep though and delivery takes for ever, about 5 mths at the moment. I will be using mine around the South Is. NZ during the coming summer then bring it back to Oz along with the Cruiser for the late winter of 08.

Regards. Clive G (NZ)

PS. Ignore Willies comment re rabid KK owners, we aren’t rabid, just misunderstood by everybody else. LOL.

Clive,

There is an owners group you may like to join when you get your

KK and can supply some proof as per the criteria.

Try joining now - surely they will welcome new members who are considering to join their ranks. Even CMCA do this.

Garth.
Thanks for the tip re the Karavan group. Need the serial No to join so will wait until I pick it up and get home again. Have to tow it home to Hamilton (2days), but will take a slow 5 day trip home through the Southern Alps. Should be a good shake down trip, hope that heater works.

Regards Clive.

Not commenting on the KKK, but I was recently at Australian Off Road Campers (why built my Odyssey CT) and they are currently building a prototype for a 'van' that will have similar characteristics to the KKK. A different design, but targeted at a similar market.

They make very good CTs so might be worth contacting them to see how close to production they are. Always good to have comething to compare with.
