In Car Battery Monitors

People i am looking for an INCAR battery monitor so i can keep an eye on my Deep cycle battery for my WAECO and also the battery in my Caravan that we use for radio etc,etc.

I have two amptech batteries one is in the car used for my waeco CF50 and the other is in the front of my caravan that we use for Radio/CD/MP3 player and to run the fridge while are travellling and gets charged from car.

Any suggestions and weblinks for specs/pics/info would be great.

hello mattche .... not really an answer to your question but an observation. I have exactly the set up you describe and keeping an eye on it will do nothing to improve its performance. What you MUST do is make sure that the set up is adequate. You should have a fridge switch so that your fridge won't drain the van battery when you stop. Your charging connection from the car to van must be via an Anderson Plug and use AT LEAST 6B&S wire. That set up will ensure that your van battery stays charged. Your van battery will run for at least a week without charging if you are only running audio appliances. In case you don't know about a fridge switch - it allows the van fridge to operate from the van battery when the van is moving but switches it off when the van has been stationary for 5 minutes, thus preserving the van battery.

Yes i understand that it wont add to its performance BUT i would just like to make sure that i keep an eye on it cause after say six/seven hours driving a lot can happen and if a battery doesn't get charged for whatever reason there goes cold fridge/food/beer etc.

The cable i am using is 8mm with dedicated earth etc its all good.The fridge in the van doesnt run of the van battery,it only runs of the auxillary car battery while the car is on,once the ignition is off the fridge is off also until i plug in 240 or turn it to gas.

So where do i geta fridge switch from and how long would a 60 AMP hour deep cycle last with an invertor fridge,not very long im guessing.Dont they draw a lot of amps/Hr.MAybe i should upgarde the battery to over 100 Ah.

Check that 8mm is sufficient to keep the battery charged while the fridge is on. As men tioned by Mick you need at least 6b&s and i think that's bigger than 8mm. You don't need a fridge switch if the ignition turns off the connection but don't expect too much from your fridge as it's a long way from the car battery to the fridge. A better system is to have the fridge run from the van battery and the car keep the van battery charged

Hi mattche

In my Patrol I fitted a simple battery volt/indoor & outdoor temperature/clock gismo from Jaycar. I made a a bracket that required no holes to be drilled but you can velcro it on.
Cost about $30 a year or so ago.
In one of the spare switch cutouts on the dash I fitted a simple rocker switch that in the top position lets me read the starting battery, in the centre position is off and in the lower position reads the aux battery. When the engine is off it indicates the battery resting voltage, when the engine is running it indicates the charging voltage. It is simple to switch from one battery to another even while the engine is running.

Maybe it is not the ideal way to do it but I feel that I have the information to give me some inkling on what is happening with my batteries and I'm happy.

From time-to-time ask someone with a quality (cost over $100) multimeter to check the voltage reading of your Jaycar meter. These devices are not designed to be accurate and could well drift with temperature too so be weary of readings when the temperature is not between 15C and 25C.

Thanks for the info.

I have and use a Fluke 77 series multimeter and am happy with the Jaycar accuracy. I use the Jaycar gismo only as a guide.

BTW It is always surprising to find how high the battery voltage and charging voltage is when the patrol has been sitting in the sun for a while. As the Jaycar gismo has a high voltage alarm it gets a workout until the car is moving and things cool down a bit.

Still have Jaycar unit myself Woodsy and found it somewhat sloppy particularly with temp as Mike suggests. Good for major issues though.

Use my GPS now mostly - for want of a better term its an engineers type GPS a Garmin 276c.

Its capable of having a very large highly visible and accurate voltage readout and even can ring an alarm if volts drop below a settable level.

Forgot to add , that saving grace of Jaycar unit is that it has a very touchy but functional calibration pot at back which enables it to be set in critical area.

I have been shopping around to fit a 3rd battery in my vehicle along with a monitoring system and I have decided to either go with the opposite lock system or install VDO volt meters on my drivers side "A"pillar. The VDO arrangement will be a bit cheapre but does require a fair effort to do it properly and get it looking good as well. I am probably going to go with the opposite lock system. I haven't got the cost breakdown on me but to fit the 3rd battery, inclusive of tray, all electricals, labour and digital display battery monitor with a few funky features was approx $840. If you just need the monitor it should be heaps cheaper. A mob called "outback accessories" also markets a digital monitor and has a website.

I have had a Jaycar monitor for about 5 years and find it excellent.
Mine is an earlier version with inside and outside temp.
Really I do not need to know within 0.1 volts what is the battery condition.
The Jaycar recently alerted me to sulphation in my starting battery when the alternator voltage started fluctuating between 14.1 and 13.7. Put the megapulse on the battery and now its 14.4.
If you do not have it directly to the battery,( eg I have linked mine to the starting battery from a feed under the seat,) you lose a couple of tenths of a volt anyway.
IMHO, the Jaycar will alert you to any serious problem such as regulator failure, battery sulphation, and if your battery is around 11.5 and is really accurate enough to be a cost effective way of tracking batteries.
Maybe not accurate but still a help.

Tell me how you get a charge rate of over 14 volts ,mine is a 91 GQ and have just fitted a bosch 120AMP alternator and it only charges at 1.75 max?????.

I would like a digital readout one so this or the ARB one might be worth looking at.

Yeah that looks ok, might just make up a panel and fit two into ,but mounting might be a worry.

I have a Toyota 79 Series and they fit in the vacant switch holes that had blanks in them, so i put one in there and the main battery one i made a panel with the winch remote controls and key switch on.

The ones I got have all got 2 decimal points and measure up to 20VDC

(1) has blue LEDs and is mounted down where the ashtray usually sits on my GU

(2) has red LEDs and is (to be) mounted in the cargo box of the Patrol, and will be controlled by a switch on the gull-wing door (just like the light in your home fridge)

(3) is actually a LCD (not LED).....black numerals on a green background; and will be mounted in the boot of the camper trailer to monitor the 2 batteries in there.

The one in the cab is switched via a ON/OFF/ON switch, so that I can monitor both the 120a/h Fullriver in the cargo box (same as the meter in the box) or switch over to monitor the 2 starting batteries (which are permanently coupled in parrallel).

I run two aux batteries in my Patrol, both 90 A/H AGM's. Got a great digital dual guage from autron which I have in a pod on the a-frame. I run both a 50 ltr waeco and a 45 litre engel (as a freezer, I have all the accessories running through a ammeter guage that I got from Jaycar for about $14 bucks. Gives an accurate reading of the amp draw out of the second aux battery to the fridges, lights and other things plugged in. I've mounted that in a power manegement board of my own construction (I'd post a photo but can't work this system out).

Depending on your set up you can fit a 3 way rotary switch. (If the batteries are all isolated from each other)

You and also use a 2 way switch if they are wire as 2 banks.
