Yes I know people get sick of tyre threads and I have done a search. My question is rather specific, has anyone changed tyres from Goodyear MTR's to Mickey Thompson MTZ's or the other way and what were your thoughts? I have a set of MTR's that are reaching the end of their life, and I know John Laws would say "When you are on to a good thing, stick to it", but I am wondering if the MTZ's are better as an all round off-road tyre that is still reasonably good on the blackstuff.
I spend most of my off-roading in the Flinders, outback SA and a bit of mud when I can find it.
Thanks in Advance

You want my opinion of Micky Thompson Tires, I usually like things made in USA but I had 2 sets of M.T Tyres and found they were too soft and chipped badly on stoney roads, ie GRR, I am going Bridgestone next but I also used BFGoodridge with much success, if your having a good run with Goodyear MTR's why change

I can't speak highly enough of the Mickey Thompson's I went from AT's to the MTZ's and I find them very good.
Mine has chipped a little but you would expect that if you go climbing rocks and play in 4x4 parks all the time. I will buy them again for sure

Of the two travellers we came across with flat tyres on our recent trip to
Cape York- both were Mickey Thompson tyres and both R/H/R. Not being an officionardo I don't know if they were MTZ, MTQ, MTZ or whatever.
One of them had tyres for his PlayDo & his C/T mounted on schmick looking Mickey Thompson rims!!with two spares. So that was 8 set ups- must've cost a motza!!

A friend was running a brand new set of Mickey Thompson FCII and had 3 punctures just cruising around Central Aus. He wasn't happy - he normally doesn't get punctures.

Thread on Outers 50/50 out of about 20 owners..
Some had sidewall issues, others had wear issues..
Some loved the tough sidewalls, others had no wear..
Usual bleep in a tire thread...
IMHO, wait a while longer, not many have done long klms on them yet, and wait for some better longer term reports
If your happy with MTR's ...

Arn't Mickey Thompson tyres a left handed Cooper ?
Have been told that the cases come from Cooper anyway.
Have not, on the other hand heard many people " bag " the MT's.
Kinda makes you wonder,?.
Cheers

Thanks everyone for your help, as I can not fault the MTR's. I think I will live by the saying "When your on a good thing, stick to it".

G'day Snowy,
I've done exactly what you are asking.......went from running MT/Rs (265/75R16) on my last Patrol to now having MTZs (315/75R16) on my current Patrol. They've done about 15 to 20,000klm so far and I'm very pleased with the result.
Like you, I was VERY happy with the MT/Rs and said last year that I'd stick with them. However, when it came time to re-shod the 6.5 I rang around and got prices. The MTZs were about $20- each cheaper than the MT/Z, so I made the decision on price alone (and I admit I was swayed by the good reports I read in 4WD Monthly......they may be biased, but they DO also tell the reader if something is a lemon).
Cheers
Roachie
