First day back at work today after 4 weeks going to Flinders Ranges, Birdsville, Diamentina NP, Carnarvon NP, and Fraser Island. The Birdsville Track was great-took the inside track and it was very easy going. I think we must have been just behind the graders wherever we went. We also managed to get to Fraser Island after all the rain on the Queensland coast so the weather was perfect all the way too! No car troubles either. Might go buy a lotto ticket!
In the meantime, I'll have to work for another 12 months before the next trip.

That's for sure. I was amazed at how easy the entire track was. After buying all that new OME suspension!!! Money spent on suspension wasn't all wasted though- certainly needed it on Fraser Island.

I too started back on Monday after 5 weeks. Did the Warrumbungles, Canarvon and Cania Gorges and got eaten by sand flies at Tannum Sands. Down to 1770, but missed Lady Musgrove Island because of the weather. Saw the whales at Hervy Bay and had a week at Rainbow Beach after 3 feet of rain. We also had 3 night over on Fraser and had Central Station to ourselves except for the 10 foot python outside the ladies toilets which had recently eaten a small child. A possum I suspect. It was amazing to see. It only moved about 5 feet in the 3 days we were there as it was so big it couldn't move. I also had no car trouble unlike our last trip to the centre, when we spent 3 days in Port Agusta having a new head fitted. 1991 Maverick. Since then I fitted a low Klm GU 4.5 engine, lots more power and no more trouble. Did over 7110k and spent $1300 on fuel. Averaged 26lt/100 on gas and about the same for the 170lt of petrol I had to use. Being on duel fuel is both an advantage and disadvantage. The gas makes the trip economical until you have to use petrol. there are still lots of places where gas is unavailable and only having a range of 250k on petrol can make thing a little difficult at times. I did a rough calculation of the costs if I had a diesel. I estimated a usage of around 15-16lt/100 in a modern car and the cost of fuel would have been about the same. The big drawback to being on duel fuel is when you have to use petrol which really hits the hip pocket. Anyway, we had a wonderfull trip, mets lots of fantastic people, many who have been on the road for many many months. Lucky buggers, we can't wait for our time to come. 8 more years and I'm out of here. that's if there's any room on the road by then. Cheers, Chambo

Hi Chambo
Same here with the sandflies in Tannum Sands. Have only just got rid of all the bite marks. Glad I didn't come across that python. I bet there were plenty of women popping behind bushes instead of going to the toilet!
I will have to settle for annual expeditions for a long time yet before I get to spend long winters on the road up north. Its a great life travelling around this country and the travelling community is terrific. In the meantime...the mortgage...work...the bills...

cheers
