Simpson Desert trip

Well, we've only got "two sleeps" before we leave for our trip to the Simpson Desert and we can't wait to get out there!

If you're out there during the next two weeks ...we've got a white/silver Prado and a yellow pack rack bag....you can't miss it!!

We're going to head West on the Rig Road to Dalhousie/Mt Dare and then back to the East on a combination of French Line, Colson Track, WAA etc .

Everything is packed and Friday night we'll be on the road.

Viv

Hi Viv,
All the best and you are in for a great trip. If you haven't been through the Simpson before, this will be your taste of the mighty Simpson and you will be back again and again, it gets in your blood.

Safe travels and enjoy the largest parrell desert system in the world.

Cheers and have a great trip

Thanks Stephen,

This is our first trip across the Simpson Desert. On other trips we've been to Birdsville, Dalhousie, Mt Dare etc but never ventured across. We're really looking forward to getting out there.

Viv

We are just back from our first Simpson crossing (WAA line East to West) - loved it, no problem areas to report. The Mt Dare to Dalhousie road is very rough with some rocks nearly as big as footballs - Take it slow, we had tyres set at 28psi and had no problems. Tyres 18psi across Simpson.
Heard reports of serious mozzies at Dalhousie at dusk, and sandfly bites at Coward Springs.
Make sure you have a tall sandflag and keep UHF on ch10 for oncoming traffic, we had equal volume of traffic in both directions.
Very little wildlife sighted, no camels or goannas, 1 dingo, 1 bearded dragon and lots of smaller lizards. Quite a lot of wildflowers and the wattle is in full bloom.

An unexpected highlight of our trip was camping at the Eringa waterhole, between Hamilton and Bloods creek.
Have a safe trip!

Dalb,

Glad that you had such a good trip and hope that ours will be the same. Thanks for the advice. I hope that the mozzies and sandflies have settled down by the time we get there!!

Best wishes

Hi Viv

We hope that you have a great trek out into the desert. It is a good time of the year to do it.

If you are passing by on your way there or home, do drop in for a cuppa. Judith is home bound, learning how to walk again after a successful TKR.

Regards

Hello Willem,

This journey is going to be a real joy for us. I'm looking forward to getting out into the desert.

Best wishes to Judith. If we're going through we'd love to call in for a yarn. If not, we hope to see you at the Pyrenee's gathering in November.

Hi Viv

We got home last Thursday from our first trip across the SD, we
had a great time and are planning to go back again in 2009 with
some friends who couldn't go with us this year. 2008 we are
going to Cape York (GQ already half packed!) Not much to
see in wildlife, 1 dingo, lots of birds and lizards, weather was
fantastic, we had no problems with tyres or anything else on
the vehicle. On the WAA line we came across a guy who had
rolled his vehicle lucky for him he wasn't hurt, he had too much
weight on his roofrack (140 Litres of Diesel in a home made fuel
tank plus all his gear). The flies were bad but if you eat before
sunup and after sunset you will be ok. Enjoy and travel safe.
Cheers

Matt & Julie

Have a great trip Viv, I am sure you will. Do you do do any driving in the sand or does Ray do it all? Anyway, have a lot of fun and relax and enjoy it. Hope it rains well while you are gone!

Hello John

Thanks for the good wishes. I haven't done any driving in the sand but I think I'll will have by the time this trip is over. I'd like to have a go. We're both keen to see what the conditions are like and how we handle them. It's going to be an interesting and enjoyable experience.

We're just happy to be doing this trip and getting away from it all for a while.

And yes, hopefully it will rain while we're away and the crops will struggle on. They're going backwards at the moment.

All the best to you and Heather,

Viv
