Howdy,

any advice on a good exhaust sytem for a 1FZJ105 Landcruiser (4.5 petrol) that is QUIET but still works well? The petrol donk tends to drone with the sports system I have at the moment and it is starting to really bug me.

Happy to customise with different muffler / resonator combos.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

V8Diesel,
Unless the motor is modified, aftermarket computer or cams and so on it's really not worth it. The standard exhaust, provided there's no leaks should be fine. Droning is usually caused by a larger diameter pipe but with the same amount of exhaust gas flowing through it. Turbo or supercharge the engine and the gases flow much quicker thus reducing the likleyhood of droning. It's like the noisy 4cyl buzz boxes going round with standard engines and an aftermarket muffler you could drive a Kenworth into.
I have an 80 series with the same engine and most likely exhaust. To me the best thing that makes them go better is a Foam air filter.

Sorry I couldn't reccomend an exhaust for you but I am only going on past (pre 4x4) experience.

Sorry I don't agree Rob. Gained ~20 kw at the wheels on my LC100 4.5 with a good sports system (2 1/2" from memory). Does drone a bit around town (a bit only) once on the highway disappears. Exhaust by Charlestone Exhaust Blacktown - very good operator, has quite a reputation for getting power out of an engine. We discussed at length extractors but concluded this would be detremental for torque and little gain in power vs cost of aftermarket headers, and that the factory twin tube headers would do the job.

I also added a Unichip and tuned it on the rollers (Graeme Cooper Automotive, St Peters) - Graeme said he had never seen a Cruiser go over 100 kw at the wheels, mine came out of the shop with 114kw (equates to about 240 kw at the flywheel). It certainly stonks now, especially over 4000 rpm. Power off road is ample.

Going through the same issue with my Paj at the moment. Had Beaudesert exhaust fit up a custom system which is droning at 2000rpm, right on cruise revs at 100k :-(
Going back this arvo to fit a different muffler. Hope that fixes it.
