cook recently, if so what are the conditions like and what travel time to allow each way?
have crossed the nullarbor to many times to count but finally going to take the time to see some extra
places. leaving in the next week plan to leave the van at Nullarbor and head out to
cook and do the head of the bight as
well.

Was over there last week. Didnt to the
Cook Road but did many outback tracks from Nullarbor across to
Mundrabilla. The tracks were fine. I would say the track is in pretty good nic as we broke down in Nullarbor and one option was to get the guys at the
Nullarbor Roadhouse to drive us to
Cook to catch the Indian Pacific back to
Adelaide. Tim at the Nullarbor Road said the road was fine to drive on. If you more info on the track why not ring the
Nullarbor Roadhouse on 08 8625 6271 and ask them for the latest info. Tim, Margaret or Peg will help you out with info.
The head of the bight is awesome. We took a 1/2 hour flight from the roadhouse. The
views were sensational with plenty of whales and their white calves swimming around
the neck of the
bright. Rodney,
the pilot was a great host and circled over the whales many times.

Rodney offered 3 flights. $79 for 20mins, $99 for 30 mins & $129 for 40mins. I did the 30 min flight. I thought it was good value.

Funny you should say that. We broke down 50kms west of Nullarbor last week. Called VKS737 in
Adelaide and they rang RACV Total Care for us. Peter, the
Nullarbor Roadhouse mechanic arrived one hour after breaking down. By the way, Nullarbor has Telstra mobile coverage. Not bad for being outback & finding your mobile works.

Whale,
The main road starts at a turnoff 46km west of Nullabor. Its a
well graded gravel road, but is usually damaged by pooling of
water, so you'll have to slow down occasionally.
We usually travel direct from Nullabor to
Knowles cave and Kudna rockhole - these are just unmaintained Nullabor tracks. Theres no signs out there - nice to have GPS and Oziexplorer, because theres a lot of tracks out there, but if you head north, you'll hit the railway line, and west, you'll hit the main fenceline road!
Cook is about 2 hours from Nullabor via the main road. About 3 hours via the rockholes.
