Hi,

Can anyone help me? I have a 2001 GU Patrol, 3.0 Litre, Manual, 115000 Klms. Over the last 1000klms or so it has developed an intermittent "clanging" type rattle at idle (will dissippear just above the specified idle speed of 750 rpm). It sometime starts as a knocking sound. No sound evident whilst in gear and mobile. HAve checked as much as visibly possible but nothing obvious. Car was in at Nissan today having another problem fixed (primer pump) but of course vehicle would not exhibit the fault whilst with them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

With clutch engaged or not? I have had noises from gear box in past vehicle. Next time you get the noise you need a big scredriver against you rear and put the other end on head, block etc. Stethoscope would be better.

Check the serpintine drive belt tensioner, the bushes flog out and you hear aslapping sound at idle, worse in wet weather.

thanks all who responded...A little more on the story...Car was put into Nissan Service last Friday to get the problem looked at, as well as another problem - sluggish, missing at low rpm, poorer fuel consumption, and engine fault indicator light coming on intermittently (I checked for water in filter - nil)
After 3 hours of diagnostics, they tell me they discovered there is air in the fuel line which is causing the engine problem. A new primer pump is required and is on order. Co-incidently, performance has quite worse in the last few days, engine light on more often, but rattle has dissipeared. Could it be something to do with engine problem? Nissan tell me the performance problem is a snowball effect, lack of fuel reaching the engine, computer says more boost please, then the whole thing just goes downhill from there. I'm no mechanic, so i'm a bit oblivious to it all!! is it normal for a service centre to charge for their "Diagnostic Time", 3 hours in this case? Thanks again everyone for your comments.

What the buggers don't tell you is they are only guessing and you're paying for it!!!

My first thaught, having a 3.0 Patrol myself, is ask for a new MAFS, now, regardless of what they say.

MANY MANY, MANY 3.0 patrol owners have had similar problems to yours and most have been a faulty MAFS (mass air flow sensor)

Thanks Muzz,

How many figures are after the dollar sign for a MFAS????

I can only imagine...4wd's - Generally everything costs at least a three digit number or more after the $ sign!!

Cheers & Thanks!!

The MAFS should be around $250. Don't let them talk you into the whole thing, plastic pipes and intake duct (one young bloke tried that on me) it will cost heaps more.

Just the MAFS! You need tamper proof allen keys to change it over, and I will bet a carton most of your problems will be fixed.

I have replaced mine twice (just clocked 140,000klm) and I recon she's due for a new one soon.
