We wondered what struck us when we hit the NT/WA border, it went from quite a good road, pass the border and down
hill from there. I'm sure there is worse though.
Enjoy the rest of your trip
Cheers

The (notso) great northern highway.....single lane sealed, single lane bridges, 4 trailer road trains.....all going past a
mine that has given royalties to the state gov of about a billion dollars over the past 20 years (I'm sure others have similar issues on other area's that FIFO workers and money....)
Cheers Andrew

a bloke at work had to drive a semi up there during the wet - the road was open on the way up but closed the day after he returned. He reckons he was driving through puddles up to the axles haha saw a couple of four wheel drivers stuck. You should have seen the prime mover when he got back - bloody mud everywhere!! Gotta love the fact it was a hire truck...

We went up there in May 2004 and it was dry with corrigations the size of speed bumps. When we drove out three days later there was a storm and the road was more like a
creek. We didn't dare stop for fear of getting bogged.

Isa to the 'Weal?
Would have to be the best road in Qld now!
9 metres wide, smooth as, and fenced most if not all the way. Was up there late in August, and it was best trip ever had on that road.
Hooroo...

I'm going to join those who nominated the Tanami Rd (WA side) and the
Broome to
Cape Leveque Rd. We've done both in the last month and they haven't improved.
Cheers
Russ.

I believe I have driven on nearly all the roads mentioned above, and must add if I had to rate them 1 to 10 with 10 being the worse, IMHO we would start 9 and 10 going to a couple of the black top ones. As for Savanah, GRR and Tanami, these would have only been around 2, 3, and 3.
We discussed this when we got home from a trip that included the Tanami, GRR and the Savanah from Roper to Hells
Gate. The roughest road we drove on was 30k's from home, it is the road from Coombah (Silver City Hwy) to
Renmark. I believe a lot people take roads close to their home yowns as being less of a threat and not as rough because they aren't as isolated and if breakages occur its easier to fix or get the vehicle home.
Of course roads like the one I mentioned above has probably triple the traffic of the real outback tracks and get less grading.
