Swmbo has a 14 yrs old Nh that has done would you believe 81000ks, I am pushing her to get the timing belt replaced now rather than wait till its done 100000ks. She is digging her heels in wants to do it at 100000ks as per the manual. I know you are supposed to replace toyotas at 150000ks or 7 years which e ver comes first.
I am worried the belt could have detroited because of age.

What are other peoples thoughts on this
Cheers Pete

Her belt is about eight years past its due by date. They perish and go hard which is when cracks appear and belt splits or looses teeth. Also pajero motor is not a free running motor, Which means 9.5 times out of 10 you bend valves.

The Jack belt is due to be done at 160,000 but the engine is non-interference, so if it breaks you won't bend any valves.

My Jack is a 98 3.5, so it's over 9 years old, with 143,000k. I haven't done the tappets (due at 100,000) or the timing belt. Am planning to do both at 160,000 plus the water pump while it's all opened up.

Thank you for that Gerhardp, I was not sure if the jack was a free runner or not. Its a bit of a relief to know you are not going to destroy the motor if it breaks. The paj 3lt is a free runner also but we will replace it asap. It is interesting to make comparisions when you own one of ea. If I could put the Paj seats in the Jack it would be a superb vehicle

Hello Pete,
Given that its much cheaper to replace a timing belt than a motor. I would have thought it should be onto its third belt by now given its age.Regardless of kms.
I would say so far you have been extremely lucky that time, heat, wear and tear of 14 yrs has allowed the belt to remain intact.
I wouldn't drive far before changing the belt myself....but it's her car. Given my experiences with my wife and vehicles, common sense and things automotive together with the fairer sex are sometimes not congruent.
Best of luck Pete
Alan.
PS I know i'm a twit with somethings she is good at so it evens out.

Thanks Al ,
Had her talked into last service and the mechanic reckoned he had not heard of one breaking because of age, and changed her mind grrrrr.

If you are a mechanic an engine rebuild pays a lot more than a belt change!

Douglas they have always done the right thing by us in the past , I believe they intentions were good but judgement erred. They have done jobs for me that I would not have done for the price.

Undo a few bolts and take the cover off and you can see the condition of the belt, rather than guessing.
