I currently have a 3 ltr Suby Outback and two a 1500kg van. I average 17 ltr per 100K. Is this considered average, good or heavy considering it's a full size van.

It seems a lot for a Subaru, but 1.5t is going to make it work.

The wind resistance of a full size van will make a big difference to fuel consuption too. Try to avoid driving into the wind if possible.
I often wonder if those wind deflectors that fit on a roof rack would help?

Time to go diesel. I just returned Friday after a 7000 k trek through three states. Overall average in my Prado Diesel (New version) was 14.1 l/ph. Yes I have a poptop, but was using the cruise and sitting on 100 km/h.

G'day Martybuzz, you would have to be happy with that result, woudnt you? What size, capacity motor does your Prado have & what loaded weight is your van. Cheers

Sorry, haven't got back sooner.
Mine is the new 3 litre Common Rail. Loaded weight of the van was about 1.4 tonne. I have come from the 4 litre petrol and the diesel out performs it every way. I can't speak highly enough of it!!!

I too have just returned from a 7000 trip in my duel fuel Maverick. I also keep thinking that I must get a diesel some time soon due to the economy. It averaged 26/100 on both petrol and gas. I only had to use 3 tanks of petrol, which included Fraser Island. After returning home I did some calculations and using usage figures of around 15-16lt/100 It would have cost me over $100 extra if I had a diesel not to mention having to do a oil change during the trip. I use this vehicle every day to and from work and I get 450k for around 100 litres of gas at a cost of $45 or so. I keep trying to convince myself that I need a diesel but on the other hand my vehicle is very affordable to run between big trips which is only every second year or so. I know if I want to do a major outback adventure then I am in trouble but even on our last trip 2 years ago to the centre, the only place I had to use petrol was through
the painted desert and the
Oodnadatta track. I carried 40 litres of the roof and didn't have to use it as was the case this trip.
If you sit down and do the sums, a duel fuel vehicle is by far the cheapest to run and maintain, with gas availability in the sticks not too bad. I think I will keep the old girl a bit longer yet.
Cheers, Chambo

Thanks all, I am now convinced that the cost to change to a diesel would be false economy considering the additional servicing costs.
Paying a bit more for the convenience of a full van by being able to pull up, plug in and enjoy is worth the additional cost.
The Suby is a beautiful car to tow with and has all the mod cons for traveling and really holds the road with the all wheel drive. I guess I’ll just keep it.
