Hi all,

Does anyone have an idea of what may cause what appears to be excessive harmonic vibrations in a D22 Turbo Diesel sump??
The vibrations are audible from the cabin when at idle or changing down gears (3rd to 2nd) and are VERY audible when turning left, particularly in 2nd and not accelerating. It almost sounds like a steering moan or binding brakes (which have been ruled out by Nissan).
Nissan have replaced the sump under warranty - noise still there though. Nissan then placed insulating tape on the bottom of the sump which seems to have dampened the sound almost to an acceptable level but can still be heard.
I am however looking to find the actual cause, so if anyone has experienced this before or may know of a possible cause PLEASE let me know.
I had a thought that the oil pickup pipe may be touching the sump in some way - is that feasible?? Nothing seems to be touching the outside of the sump.

Cheers

Furry
Not being able to hear/feel the vibes - I'm guessing that this might be a similar problem I had with my GU Patrol....the turning left thing comes to mind.....my problem was an over-excited LSD. Before you go looking for anything really serious ask your mechanic to put some LSD additive in your rear diff...if the LSD is the problem then this will fix it.
Again - I'm only guessing and I'm not even sure if the D22 has an LSD.

Cheers
Pete

....and then of course there is the possibility that it could be a problem with your dual mass flywheel but try the LSD first.

Hi Furry, First question is it auto????
Second question have you checked all your fluids????
Thrid question have you taken harmonic balancer off for a look see???
And fourth has anyone worked on you tailshaft???
Fifth replaced any belts lately???

Reasons i asked is, one the torque converter might be loose, two fluid might be low, thirdly if the harmonic balancer has broken the key the thing may idle roughly??? ( not sure if the injector timing runs off the cam shaft or belt timing!!!)

These are just all suggestion only, oh and where do you live i hope not on the sunshine coast, the nissan dealer there sucks!!!

Hey, thanks for the suggestions - no LSD up front on the D22 but I can't rule out the possibility of the harmonics from the sump and the noise when turning left are from separate problems, so I'll bear that in mind Patroll22.

Shade10, some answers for you:-

It's a manual
All fluids have recently been changed (it was happening before the recent 40k service) but I haven't personally checked.
Haven't checked the harmonic balancer - now on the to do list :)
No tailshaft work since I've had the truck (about 12 mths) and don't know the previous history.
No new belts.

I'm down in Shorncliffe (Brissy) - I know of at least one Nissan dealer down here that sucks too :) I may have to try Redcliffe Village Nissan unless anyone advises otherwise. Northside 4x4 at Caboolture do some good work too.

Anyway, thanks again for the info guys and feel free to post any more ideas 'cause this noise is driving me ccrrraaazzzyyyy!!!!!.
I'll post results of your ideas once checked :)
