What was wrong with the original switch? Can you plug it back in and see if the problem goes away?
Assuming the problem started when the new switch went in, it may have been wired incorrectly to the plug.
Good luck.

Old switch just wouldn't work at all so chucked it.
Can't wire it it wrong as it has a plug in type that will only go in one way, also it has worked fine for the past week, just today light came on while parked at home

Check your spotlight wiring, there may be a wire rubbed through and feeding to the high beam light.

was it a new one or one from the wreckers?
If its second hand maybe remove it again and do a good clean up of any connecting pins ect, blow some dust ect out of it ect

Yeah Stefan, 2nd hand one but gave it a good clean before I fitted it.
I would have thought that the power would go to both lights from the same part of switch, which puzzles me why everything works fine until I turn all lights off and one stays on, obviously getting a leak from somewhere

Have you checked the relays out?

Sometimes as the relays get older the contacts roughen up and they can "latch on" and will not turn off again, worth trying a new set of relays to see if that helps out I reckon.

With the GQ you can take the switch to bits to clean the contacts inside , it was fairly common for them to play up.... One light on or not work ect

On my GQ the headlight switch is a sealed unit (1994 RX) and I had no end of trouble with headlights which was discussed at length here in the
forum, with a diverse lot of ideas coming to the fore. My light trouble was no High Beam in the right hand light.
In the end I replaced the headlight switch and stalk with a used one from the wreckers and that solved the problem.

Willem
Had exactly the same prob as you, replaced switch and stalk too and solved problem for a week until yesterday.
Pulled the plug out from rear of light overnightto save battery plugged it back in about 1 hour ago and "HEY PRESTO" everything is back to normal,
figure that one out.. gremlins methinks.

ATM if it aint broke don't fix it...lol
I am most likely to break it even further. I still have the old one so might go have a play if I get the inclination. Thanks for the heads-up
Cheers

Hello Poppy, GQ's don't have relays for there head lights unless some one has fitted them.
They are pretty straight forward design, the switch for the headlights is much like a standard switch where you have power coming in from on end and it goes out the other end.
The head light switch has 3 circuits... (not including turn signals)
1) circuit is for the
park / number plate lights via a 10 amp fuse
2) circuit is the left hand head light HI / Low beam via a 15 amp fuse.
3) circuit is the right hand head light HI / Low beam via a 15 amp fuse.
On the plug for the switch you should have RED wire with a BLACK trace and a RED wire with a YELLOW trace, these two wires are a 12 volt feed to you Hi and Low beam left hand head light.
I think the RED wire with YELLOW trace is Low beam and the RED wire with BLACK trace is Hi beam.
If not it will be the other way around
I would almost be 100% sure it is the switch, it is a bad circuit design.
I would strongly recommend if any one is using globes bigger then the factory 55 / 60 watt ones the should look at putting relays in with separate fuses for Hi and Low beams.
If anyone wants to know how just ask me.
Regards Richard

Hey Poppy,
Dunno whether it helps -60 series Tojo - changed globes, swore, checked wiring, swore - LHS light low beam only - was advised by Tojo Mecknic to
check BOTH headlight fuses - bingo - no swear.
60 series cruiser has fuse for each headlight
