Hi All, we are planning to be at the
Birdsville races next year and are in the very early stages of planning same.
I was wondering about accomadation there, I know there is a caravan
park but not sure if you can book ahead or is it first in best dressed.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Ray, It's a great stage of life when you get to "dunworkin" as long as the health is good.
We are looking forward to
Birdsville, might see you in the crowd, we will be easy to spot, we will be the sober ones!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be heading there in a convoy of 4, I think same time then on to Innaminca via
Walkers crossing. I think you actualy
camp out of town no booking but Ruth may set us straight.

I have just come through
Walkers crossing and found it pretty easy going but caravans and trailers are not recommended. It took about 6 hours from
Birdsville to Innaminka 4 hours on the
Walkers crossing track with stops and lunch. It's a real pretty drive and by far the best and quickest route between the two towns. The track passes through private property for most of the way so I don't think you can
camp on the way.

Hi cuffs, thanks for the followup. At this stage we are going up through
Roxby Downs, Maree and back through
Innamincka, sounds like we will have to do a bit of research on
Walkers Crossing.
Cheers

I doubt that you will be able to book a site at this late stage. They only have a few powered sites and I'm not sure if they can be booked or not,but you can rest assured that if they able to be booked they would be all gone by now. The caravan
park accommodates literally thousands of campers during the races week and about 99% of them are placed in a big paddock between the main
park and the river. There is also plenty of
camping along the river and in various
places on the flats around the town. Other types of accommodation are virtually non existent. The hotel has a few motel style rooms but they would also be booked by now. The trick is to set yourself up for a
bush camp but be prepared to share it with 6-8,000 others!!

I have just come back from the horseless
Birdsville races this year and I agree with Terry. Plan on
bush camping out of town a couple of kms. there is room for thousands of campers. The council even grade tracks along the Diamantina river and dump piles of firewood and have skip
bins strategically placed for rubbish disposal. You would be best to have your own
toilet facilities but if not showers and
toilets are available in
birdsville for a small fee. It was very impressive how organised and orderly the whole thing was. They declare a two block zone around the pub basically as a drinking/lawless zone where anything goes but outside that area the cops have a presence with breathalysers and speed cameras. The race track is about 5 kms out of town so the best is to use the commuter busses for a gold coin donation rather than run the gauntlet with the cops. They were even breathalysing at 6 am in the morning!

Hi Terry, Thanks for the information, I sort of had that feeling that that would be the case, we will be
camping and are pretty
well self sufficient, no problems there.
Hi Graham, thanks for your input, we are planning to get there a week before the races so hopefully we will find a pretty good spot.
We will probably leave the buses for the ones who may need them as we won't be bothered by the constabulary, 6am in the morning I will probably be still trying to sleep, ha ha ha
Cheers

Hi Doug, things going
well here, tell Dusty that Simba is doing just fine, we have really got our hopes up with her recovery.
Sounds awfully cold where you are, not our cup of tea, we like the warm climates.
You mentioned above about Big Red, how far out of
Birdsville is Big Red? is there a
camping ground or something there? Don't know anything about that area at all, anywhere outside of WA/SA we know absolutely nothing except what we research and read about but we plan to change that.
Cheers
Deanna

Good to hear Simba is OK ,
Big Red is about 31klm as the bird flies from Town, Just my way of saying I don't being crowded , and I would go out there too, I love the Isolation, There is a little picnic table and seats set amid the gibbers and that's the limit for a Caravan

Thanks for that Doug, we are not crowd people either, we get out there for the quiet life, to hear the birds sing and watch the wildlife of all forms go by, the scenery out there far out stages all the man made 'attractions' but having said that it is also nice to get home for a while.
Cheers

Big Red is the busiest street in town during race week. Every man and his dog want to have a go at it! Not the place to
camp unless you like the sound of roaring diesels and swearing rev heads.

Dunworkin Doug's pulling your legs, B's in the middle of
the desert so all you need to watch out for are the 2 legged
sharks.

No Crocs there, The nearest Croc would be 880 / 900 klm to
Burketown,What you will get is Flies,Flies,Flies, and more Flies, with a mixture of every other type of bloody insect known if it rains , Now putting the bugs aside ....and the hords of humans, Paradise is a waiting you , I just love the Channel Country, There is no doubt you and Simba will have a ball , something that will remain etched in your mind forever, And right now I am not joking,

The flies we thought might be quite bad out there but we do have nets.
Thanks for the info, we have plenty of time to put it all together.
