Greetings guys - im new to this - so this may be a simple fix ,and i hope it is

Ok just got this receiver from ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260158609351&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016

12 chan receiver - Now i tried to install on my old lap top ( P800 ) with the needed drivers and then installed Oziexplorer

For the computer i went into the device hardware and changed all the settings such as Port 5 and baud rate 4800

then in oziexplorer i done the same settings ...

then opened the map -- clicked on GPS NMEA ONLY and then clicked set waypoints to gps

then CTL s to start communicating -- now once of twice it connect very quickly and show my location -- then other times it will not connect AT ALL

when i finally got it to connect - i went for a drive with it --- as soon as i went 20 feet -- it lost connection and would not reconnect at all just get the "NO FIX " message flash on the bottom right of screen

I then installed on a new pent 4 lap top -- and the home pc with similar results

is the receiver dodgy - or am i missing something >

What type of GPS receiver are you using, name, model. Does it have a build-in aerial or do you need an external aerial ??

If none of the advice given you works you may like to follow what I did.
I was fortunate, when buying my GPS, to meet up with a geologist who was working in the Kimberley. He told me to buy an Etrex Legend Garmin and to put Natmap Raster on my laptop.
The Garmin is small enough to carry if you go walking and by re-setting it you can find your way back to camp easily. It reads in longtitude/latitude and the other funny system now current.
The mapping system works well and even if I had pots of money I doubt I would change it.
Kind regards
Brian

The GPS receiver you bought is a low end product, not sure if anyone is moving forward with that Sony chip, you want one with the Sirfstar 111 Chip like this one from Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GPS-20-Channels-USB-Receiver-SirfStar-III-NEW_W0QQitemZ130154432806QQihZ003QQcategoryZ34290QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This is a 20 channel GPS with newer technology that gives you a better signal, from what you have explained the signal is dropping out all the time, so I would be buying a better GPS if you want some form of reliability.
