hi all
I have just joined this site and have been reading through all the interesting posts. So far I have a cruised and a family van and we are all set to go - minus a few issues we need to resolve!!
We have a 4 month old bub and would like to utilise the bottom bunk for him to sleep in. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, knows of any products, we could use as a bedrail or something to stop him falling/getting out/stuck anything bad really! There is no room for a portacot or travel cot.
Would really appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks
mal

Hi Mal

Welcome to the site.

Not sure our approach would suit everyone. Anyway, we basically have 4 beds in our van, and when child no. 3 arrived we were faced with the same problem. So we bought about 0.5m wide by 1m long strip of 75mm think sponge rubber, to fit between our island bed and side of van - on the floor!! All nice and snug - bubs loved it. Now our oldest is in a tent outside and bubs occupies one of the bunks. Worked out well as I see it.

Somewhere I have seen a purpose made plastic rail thingo that is an "L" shape in x-section, and the lower bit is under the bed. Would not be hard to make from wood either. best wishes JD

My wife found an idea on a baby forum she reads that stops our 16 month old from rolling out of a normal bed and would suit a flat bunk ( as opposed to a stretcher type bunk). Just roll up a couple of beach towels lengthways and put them under the bottom (fitted is better) sheet on either side. We still have a couple of pillows on the floor just in case but they have not been needed yet.

Sew one of those little baby suits, the ones that resemble overalls to the actual bunk . Zip baby in suit.

Don't tell my wife I posted this.

Haha, that's funny, but I think you're actually on to a good idea there. You can get baby sleeping suits which are essentially a sleeping bag with arm-holes and hood. You could possibly stitch straps/velcro etc with a little bit of give so that bubs could roll a bit but not off the bed. Interested in marketing it? LOL

You could get a piece of canvas or mesh sewn about 3/4 of the length of the bunk & around 400mm wide, screw it to the bottom of the bunk just under the mattress, then tie a cord from an eyelet in each upper corner to the underside of the top bunk.
On a boat, it is referred to as a "leecloth" & is for precisely that purpose.

If suitable, you could get some new light tie down straps. Make sure the buckles are well out of the way... maybe three stretched along the side?

there are bunk net things you can buy, I"m not sure how sturdy they are...perhaps Camec might have a product.

thanks all
there are some great ideas there. hmmm...perhaps i should have got a smaller van, smaller 4wd and put him on the floor but i guess as he gets older, as he will, bunks will be ideal.

Hi,

I would buy a Snuggle Bed from the Baby shop and sleep him in that on the bunk. I'm sure if you Google them you will find a photo. A lot of people use them in cots when the babies are small. They are made form the same material that a bassinett mattress is made from.

Other then having to buy one of them ( which I'm sure you could sell afterwards if you never needed it again), I would consider taking a travel cot and sleeping it on the bunk. That way the baby is safe and you dont need to find any more room on the floor to sleep him. I am pretty sure I have seen pop up travel cots in Big W which fold up flat for travelling.

Good Luck,

Melissa
