David was given a voucher for hot air ballooning in Northam for his 40th birthday from family and we are booked in to use it in a few weeks times. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for accommodation the night before. They have a list of places but they mean nothing to me on the list and we're not used to booking accommodation but think we will splash out and get ourselves a room in a B&B or similar. Accom to incl the kids.
The list includes: Brackson House, Liddelow on Avaon, Colonial Tavern, Bona Vista, Egoline Reflections, Pencader & Kates Cottages, Muresk Agricultural College Houses, Shamrock Hotel. Any stand outs? Comments, recommendations?

Is that getting close to school holidays? Better be quick if it is, could be hard to find somewhere!

Yes good point, but we're going a few weeks into Term 4 so should be ok.

My mum lives next door to Brackston House. It is very neat and well run and according to my mum the owners are a nice couple.

It's not too far from the airport and I think a bit more intimate. It is also very popular as the Avon Valley is becoming a popular destination.

Quick way to get to it is to take the Great Eastern Hwy by pass, cross over the Avon River and take the Irshtown turn off (first exit after the Avon River). Turn left onto Irshtown Rd and follow it into town.

You will pass Morby Cottage on the left (good for a cuppa and scones) and on the right handside is a reserve belonging to the Northam Gun club - there are roos and emus etc for the kids to look at - Brackston House is on the right handside just past the reserve. You have gone too far if you hit a 'T' intersection (Taylor St).

Hope this helps.

Also my cousin has built some chalets on his hobby farm, just outside of town near the Army Camp, for tourists but they are all booked up for the next 12 months or so; however, I am trying to convince him to put in an area for campertrailers etc.

Yes, I was wondering if there was anywhere (other than the town CP) for camping. Would be lovely if these B&B's were more like station stays and allowed self-sufficient campers to pay a small fee even if dinner/breakfast etc was compulsory in their rooms would be nice to at least get to stay on a property.

Hi Michelle,
Give Mark at the Avon Bridge Hotel a call if you dont have any luck with the others, 96221023.
He has revamped the the place but still retained the old world charm.

PS....try talking him into taking his swish 100 series of road.

Cheers...........Lionel.

Was sort of avoiding the Hotels/Taverns due to wanting to take our young girls ( 3yr old and 7 yr old). Have done my time staying at these sort of establishments and although often quaint, maybe not what I had in mind for my girls unless I am misguided in these assumptions of Northam's best establishments?

Gday Michelle

Unfortunately Brackston House does not allow kids under 12 or 14. Liddelow on Avon has a good name and is in town. Egoline Reflections is on the Toodyay Road and a little out of town, but also with a good name.

Basic rooms are available at Fitzgeralds and Patrick who runs the place will certainly look after you.

Good luck, hope the day is clear for the trip. Looking forward to your report.

Cheers

I've never heard of a place not allowing children. What is that about? Is it X-rated or something? Or is that to ensure that the guests don't have to put up the noise of other people's little "brats" - if so, fair enough. Mine are full-on so we better stay clear.

Thanks everyone, you've been extremely helpful. I'll let you know what we choose, and how it all goes. Gotta be safer than a plane in Nevada!

I grew up in Northam and whilst I haven't lived there for many, many years I did stay at Liddelow on Avon in '05 and found them to be most helpful and accommodating. Quaint little place on the river but might be a bit small for 4 of you so might pay to give them a call.
Egoline could be your option if it's the farm on Toodyay Rd
