The two 'better known' brands are Codan & Barrett..
Is there any particular model that you are looking at ???
Bear in mind that the antenna is a crucial component of HF installation..

not crucial on the model or brand, but theres alot on ebay just wondering about the new brands? Some are uhf and hf just sounds like its too good to be true for the price 1000-1500.

Just had a quick look on ebay. I think you are looking at the HAM sets. These can NOT be used on the 4WD networks.
Signman should be able to give more information on their use.

I would also add the ICOM F7000 to the list

http://www.timeplus.com.au/shop/Shop/HFRadio/ICF7000HFTransceiver

hook it up to a Moonraker autotune aerial http://www.moonraker.com.au/techni/autotune.htm
and you have a very good setup

Well they can... but you're not supposed to because they are not "Type Approved".

I have been using one now for 2 years - am a member of VKS and Bush Telegraph have declared in my mebership the type of radio I use and have had no issues with either organisation accepting me as a member.

This is a direct quote off Reid's radio webpage

The Bushphone Plus+ Network is a direct dial service utilising the telcall format. The following radios are amongst those that can be used on this network:

Codan Codan NGT Barrett 250 Q-mac HF-90
9323 550
8528 551
Icom F700 "

The Icom F700 is a typo should be Icom F7000

Mate,
Best bet is to go second hand, if you like the platform trade up. I bought a Codan 9323 & auto tune antenna which are great. Can talk to Derby Perth Charters Towers etc. Post an enquiry in the trader section and wait. Performance of the unit depends on the ionosphere though I have been very impressed with mine.

Cheers

we recently bought a Codan AGt, but like you had no idea what was what so we went to the Communications experts who put us on the right track after we told them what our needs were. WWe are very impressed by what the radio is capable of doing and should have got one years ago.
