I have a 2006 model GU patrol and was wondering what the fuel usage should be. I have done approximately 18,000 Km and I am averaging 14.88 Lt / 100 Km. I have been told that it will get better as I do more Km. At this stage most of my driving has been around town.

I'd sort it out now Iceman, the 3lt will not drop much over time.
The car is rated at 11lt/100km or less and that is what you can legally expect if driven accordingly unless its modified or tyres low pressure etc.
You should be able to achieve less driven carefully ,
mine gets 16.5 long term when rated at 17.5 (4800 patrol)

It should be around the 12l/100k around town, but like alot of things, this can vary depending on your right boot, traffic, snorkle, tyre size, roof rack and so on.
Nearly 15l/100k should be what your getting if towing or loaded up on a trip, from experience travelling with and meeting guys with a 3l Patrol, they normally average the same as my Disco 2, so maybe a visit back to the dealer to have it checked may be in order, might be as simple as a faulty MAF sensor.

My 3litre manual patrol does 8-8.5 k/litre not towing and 6-6.5k/l towing an 1100kg camper. The patrol has full length roof rack and weighs 3 tonne

Mine used to do roughly the same. Has 150K on the clock. Does a little better now with gas injection added, but havent really worked out any conclusive figures for it yet since adding the gas.

Hi,
If yours is an auto, then that is not all that far off the mark in city driving. I have found the manuals are noticeably better around town and this reverses in highway running where the autos are better, because of taller gearing. I have a manual with a roof tent always on and get around 12l/100k around town, rising to around 13+/100 running on the freeway close to the speed limit.
A friend has an auto, and his uses close to 15/100 around town dropping to 10-11/100 on a country run. He has no roof rack on it.

It is not manual/auto difference, but rather roof rack. When I have removed roof rack from my car I figured out that it actually cost me around 2L/100km on freeway.

Thanks, I did forget to mention that it is an Auto. I am planning a trip in a few weeks after the footy finals so I will check the highway driving then.

Around town your fuel useage jumps dramatically in a BIG vehicle like that, my Hilux TD averages 9.8 on the highway and probably 11.3 on an easy town cycle. Everybody says you'll get better economy once you've done 50,000km's in a new diesel, I haven't found that.
Mine has been consistant from day one.
Wait for a goog highway run and I'm sure you'll get between 10-11KM/100...

Thanks, I hope to go to
Port Lincoln,
Coffin bay and up to
Ceduna over the Christmas holidays but I will be fully laden with Roof Rack then. It will be interesting though to see how it goes.

I was sceptical when several people at the local Nissan dealer told me "It will get better after 25000km etc" but in fact it actually has got better and has now done 57000km (Must be about to go bang:-)
Mine is auto, no roof rack and the diffs, trans and transfer case is on fully synthetics since 40000km. On a trip last week from
Perth to Geraldlton then Geraltdon to
Carnarvon with cruise control set at 110kph no air con on first leg but air con on second leg not towing it did 23.8mpg and 24.89mpg respectively. I will send you the exact km's and litres tomorrow when I get the figures out of the car. Around town it does about 22-23mpg but we live 70km from the
Perth CBD so it is not all stop/start driving.

Thanks, I would appreciate viewing your stats. I have been keeping
mine since I bought the vehicle as I was told that Diesels are better for fuel economy. I did have a roof rack on but have taken it off for the last few 1K's and there is a bit of a difference.

Hi Iceman, I'd be a bit wary of some of the claimed fuel figures, they may be calculated from odometer kms travelled. The Nissan speedo is very inaccurate on standard 265/70 tyres. I thought I was getting around 11.4 l/100 km av with some around town and some highway. On checking with the GPS the speedo reads much faster than the GPS which means the distance travelled is much less than indicated.
Ihave now changed to 265/75 tyres and even with these there is a 3-4 km/hr difference in speed so the kms are still a bit short ! My indicated consumption with the larger tyres and mainly highway driving now, is 12.8 - 13.4 l/100 km. Some of this could be explained by the changed gearing but more I think by the improved speedo accuracy.
I didn't find the fuel economy changed much with increased kms, it is very difficult to make accurate comparisons as there are just too many variables in driving conditions over time.

Thanks Ken, I have 265/75 Duellers which where on the truck when I bought it. I have just set up on my Laptop OziExplorer GPS system and I am finding that the GPS speedo is a few km's different to my speedo. So at 100 Kph on the Speedo I am doing 103 to 103.5 Kph. This now has me concern with all the speed cameras set up now on the freeways in
Melbourne. Overall I just thought I should be getting around 12 to 13 Lt's / 100 km.

My GQ 4.2 diesel (no turbo) uses about 11.5L/100, mostly highway driving. Add a full length roof rack, it goes up by 2km/L. That is with 350000km. Probably not as much grunt as yours though.
My work vehicle, a new Hilux with the D4D engine, started at 14L/100, the next
tank was 12L/100, and the most recent was 10L/100. (All highway k's). If it keeps improving like this, the ninth
tank will fill itself up.....

My tyres are the standard factory rubber Bridgestone 275/70R17 A/T D693 Duellers and I run them at 34 PSI on the bitumen. I don't have a GPS but according to the distance posts placed every 10km by the Main Roads Department my odometer is accurate. I suppose if you want to split hairs the tyres have now done 57000km so the distance degree of accuracy would be a bit different from when they were new hence larger OD. Also some bowsers are inaccurate with regard to the litres dispensed (oil companies make more profit that way) but if you keep records every time you fill up and then say every 4 or 5000km re-calculate the consumption you are going to get a pretty good indication of whether it uses 17L/100km like a 4.8 petrol or 11.5L/100km. Also by doing that you take account of the times that the
tank may have not been full (apologies to my wife) and by "full" I mean so you can actually see the liquid (not foam) in the filler neck leaving 25mm space for the fuel cap to screw in as opposed to when the dispenser trigger "clicked off". The only control I have over what it uses is the way I drive it. Headwinds, ambient temperature, humidity, gradients, other traffic, etc, etc are outside my control and I only record usage every time I fill up as a way of gauging how it is running.
Upper Swan to
Geraldton @ 110kph air con off 376.4km used 45.84 Litres = 8.21km/L = 12.18L/100km = 23.19mpg.
Geraldton to
Carnarvon @ 110kph air con on 462.6km used 52.62L = 8.79km/L = 11.37L/100km = 24.83mpg.
Geraldton to
Perth @ 90-110kph air con on 632.8km used 70L = 9.04km/L = 11.06L/100km = 25.54mpg (including driving around the metro area for a week) All fills were with liquid (not foam) to within 25mm of the top of the filler neck. Note that for accuracy you must either fill both tanks every time or only the main
tank because every time you start up the sub-
tank pump runs for a short time transferring fuel into the main
tank (that is why the sub-
tank gauge drops slightly over time when not in use) and you will get a better but false result if you don't count the usage of that fuel. That is why if you fill both tanks to the top, record the speedo reading, drive for 4-5000km or whatever you choose, record all litres dispensed and then fill both tanks right up again noting the speedo reading and do you calculations. That way if you only got a partial
tank full at any time you still get an accurate consumption figure. I prefer to work in MPG (because I am age challenged) and use the formula: Km divided by Litres x 2.8247358.

Hi blown4by,
Thanks for your information, I will be reviewing my calculations and how I arrived at them. I rang my Dealer and spoke to them and they stated that for an Auto I should be getting 11 on the highway and around 13,5 Lt's / 100 Km around town. I am going to get my truck tested to see if the injectors are feeding too much fuel.
