We have a Toyota Coaster powered by a 186 Holden red motor with a five speed overdrive g/box (Daihatsu I think). This combination works AOK, however I need to change to an automatic as I have a bung shoulder and the column change is too much for me. A Holden Tri-matic has been suggested, however I am not sure it would be robust enough to drive a two ton truck. Does anyone know of a suitable alternative, maybe a landrover four speed auto or similar? Any informed feedback would be muc appreciated.

If your 186 can push it...there is a Trimatic (traumatic) that can handle the load, these can be made to handle huge HP for their relative size. Also thier relatively small parasitic HP drain as compared to a TH350/400.
I think you will miss the economy of the 5speed, the easy conversions are all older 3 speed autos with no lock-up torque converter.
Only the later model TH400 - 4L80E has four speed but they were electronically controlled. Rumour has it the VP crumple doors had a pre-electronic TH400 but would be still very large and nearly kill the 186 turning it.
There may be a small 4speed auto suitable but Im no Auto expert..might pay to speak to a trans specialist.
Goodluck
Matt.

What economy? A 186 trying to push along a 3 tonne Coaster getting economy...sure The only time you'd be getting economy is when its at idle. Maybe a conversion to diesel with an auto box might get some economy.

Wiz the term economy was used in referance to the 5 speed compared to a three speed auto....I thought that was pretty clear! The poster is happy with his vehicle apart from not being able to shift manually now so obviously he is happy with his economy, hence why I alerted him to the concequence...constructive?

Have you thought of getting advice from a transmission specialist or mechanic?

A turbo 700/4L60 should do the trick, a 4L80E would be overkill and much more expensive.
