Being dicked around by the dealer re the Silent Armours (265/75/16) on the Troopy.
The tyres have a type of dimple in the sidewall, there are 2 to 3 on each tyre. When you run your hand around the sidewall you can feel the dimple. It is also visible when looking at the tyre.
Dealer says this is normal and is
the spot where the carcass joins when moulded. Another dealer (in
Charleville) says he's never seen that before, only on truck tyres.
Some of the tyres now have up to 160g in weights on them to balance! Had tyres 6 mths and when first fitted had only 20 - 30g weights.
NEW MANAGER says they were probably fitted incorrectly to start with and where probably never double inflated, what ever that means.
Has anyone heard of this dimple thing?
John

Gday John,
Hope your travels are going
well!
I think the dimples are normal. A mate also has a set of Silent Armours and we've both got dimples. Don't know about the balance problem.
Mine have little weights, but I've never had them rebalanced.
We've both done about 35,000k now - almost all is on desert trips. My friend has had two tyres replaced recently by Goodyear at no cost - one because it had a sidewall delamination (it exploded in his driveway!) and another had an obvious bulge in the sidewall due to a manufacturing defect. So maybe they have an issue with the sidewalls ?????? Certainly worth keeping an eye on it.
We've been otherwise happy. Only had one puncture between the two sets, and that was a sidewall stake on the
Madigan line.

Hi Phil
Thks for that, I was certain something was amiss but it seems it's common.
Otherwise the tryes have been performing and wearing
well.
We'll be heading your way in the next 6mths so we'll give you a hoy if we're nearby.

John,
Yep it would certainly be great to catch up and hear about your tripping around - might give me some ideas about retirement in 5-10years! Just MM me close to the time. We're located at Flinders
Park, between the city and
the beach.
Cheers
Phil

Cheers mate, shall do.
I got 4 brand new SA's today out of the dealer because they couldn't balance the old ones satisfactorily. Gotta be happy with that. I think it was the $16 guarantee that tipped it for me. Gotta thank you for that bit of advice 6mths ago. :)

Mine have the dimple effect also.
No balancing issues though (very little weights on them)
When I asked about it was told it was common to all US made Goodyears
Been very happy with them, performed faultlessly on
Cape York trip a couple of months ago.
Our Tyre bloke reckons overall he has much less problems with US made carcases of all brands that any other sort.

Any ideas about the "double inflated" comment?

George,
If these are tube type tyres, then I'd suggest that "double inflation" is when the tyre/tube is first fitted to the rim, it's blown up, then let down again. This is supposed to remove any creases, or folds in the tube, which can wear, and cause a flattie.
If they're tubeless tyres then I wouldn't have a clue!
Hooroo...

George,
As they're tubeless tyres, I've never seen them "double inflated". Unless they had a lot of weights, and the dealer rotated the tyre 180degrees on the rim and rebalanced.
