Hi each

Anybody had any experience of having their 4WD taken to Adelaide (or anywhere else for that matter) from Darwin?

I'm trying to get some idea as to the cost of such transport.

Happy days

George

I've seen a lot of loaded Finnemores car carriers up to Darwin- and coming south empty...might be worth a follow-up???

Try the train. I am sure they do vehicles as cargo.

Kev, Do you have to be a passenger on the train or can you just freight a vehicle ?

From the Ghan web site

Please Do Not Ring Regarding Car Transportation Only: Call Patricks or Toll Trucking Companies if you are not traveling on the train personally. We do not assist with cars unless you are travelling Gold Kangaroo Service. Then it is $199 per car with a minimum of two persons traveling. The Ghan is not a freight train, ring a freight forwarder regarding movement of goods between Adelaide & Darwin.

Cheers Kev

The little bit of research I've done with the likes of Toll & Finemores indicates that the vehicle must be empty (ie no camping gear - you can't load the vehicle up with gear at all), so it then becomes a matter of freighting all your gear seperately.

However if you can come up with something other than this, I'd be keen to hear. Am hoping to do a kimberley trip and truck the ute home, with camping on board.

Good luck! John

George

Shouldn't have much trouble getting a back load to Adelaide as most people cant get out the place quick enough.

Come close I need to whisper...........
Just be careful as there are alot very shadey charaters living down that part of OZ all full of misinformation ready to pounce on the unsuspecting traveller....So you have been warned. LOL

Sorry cant help with your post. :)

Hi folks -thanks for the replies. I did do some research and the train would cost about over a $1000 dollars (from memory) with the 2 Kangaroo class tickets - also found out about the car having to be in 'as sold' condition i.e only the spare and jack etc no camping equipment aboard for the train and for all the trucking companies I researched. The cost Darwin-Adelaide in 'bare' condition does appear to be about $500 but you'd have to add the cost of packing/shipping all the camping gear that would be in the vehicle separaretly of course.

Interestingly the cost to get a car from Adelaide to Darwin is a about double the cost of Darwin to Adelaide..........funny how the diesel, wages, food etc etc is double north to south over south to north isn't it..............

Oh -thanks Ross - I'll be careful!

Happy days

George,

It cost double cause they are driving uphill all the way from Adelaide to Darwin and downhill for the reverse LOL

At $150.00 a day for fuel, it is going to cost YOU more than the $100.00 a day you are asking for!!!

Obviously fuel is on top of $100.00 a day

I have just been through the exercise and you can't take a troopy on the Ghan as it is too high. There is a maximum of 2 metres for any vehicle ..no tinnies or surfboards on the roof either.
