I'm looking at purchasing a new Hilux, but am debating the benefits of the traditional free wheeling hubs on the standard dual cab, or the fixed hubs on the SR5 model. Having previously owned a 2.4D back in the early nineties, I'm wary of potential excessive wear, noise or fuel consumption. Whadda ya reckon?

Paddy,

If you want the SR5, go that option and put after-market free-wheeling hubs on - about $300 - $400 I think.Cheers, Jim

Thanks Jim,

What are the disadvantages and advantages of free wheeling versus the fixed hubs?

Patrick,

I am from the "mechanical nincompoopus" family - so rather than re-explain things that have been told to me I will direct you towards people who know what they are talking about.
