What do you recomend to keep ants at bay when camping?

I heard a while ago of some sort of spike you put in the ground that supposedly sends out some sort of electronic repellent. Anyone used one of these?

Try ant sand, or johnsons baby powder.

Talcum powder works the best we've found, the ants won't cross over it. Get the cheap and cheerful no name brands and put a trail around you!

That's the word I was after Talcum powder not Johnsons Baby powder (it's to expensive for ants LOL).

Only if they land on it; you need to put it on your head.

Definitely keeps yowies away though. How do I know that? I'm sure all the talc users have never seen a yowie, so it must work!

Hi,

I always take ant sand ( local supermarket sells it near the fly spray). As soon as my tent is set up we spread it around to make sure we dont get any. We have never had any problems with them so it must work!

I think the spike part was from a TV ad some years ago where a good looking sheila was lying in bed, with an anteater sucking up ants, and she says "get'em Spike" but it wasn't an electrical repellent system.
But I guess anteaters would work.
In my experience, the only really effective way is to move where the ants aren't, but other than that, ant powder has been moderatly successful.
Good luck.

That ad was for womens underwear 'Ants Pants'

But I guess anteaters would still work anyway

We take a can of outdoor surface spray and spray round the perimeter. Works a treat when camping.
When vanning spray the wind down legs and the jockey wheel plus the axle with outdoor surface spray which works well until it is hit with water etc.
Easily carried and no mess.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

We use talc on the ground as per above. Excellent results. Ants falling out of trees can be a pain. If hanging a rubbish bag off a tree or similar give it a good spray with surface spray, including the rope. We use old chaff bags as rubbish bags and a spray over wiith the surface spray does the trick.
We also carry ant powder incase the area is infested with ants. sprinkle on the more distant mounds/holes as the stuff stinks.

Learnt the hard way.

Just what our delicate environment needs -- someone with a can of poison spraying it all over the place - perhaps we should kill all the spiders , insects , snakes and anyting else that may bother us when we are in the bush ?

aah wait -- we do that already - its called suburbia

Only had ants in the camp recently. They were largish red ones and we just let them forage and take away the crumbs. They didnt seem to mind getting trod on and we didnt mind them at all.

and that's what its about! - getting back to nature - not going bush then poisoning everything in a 100 meter area for the sake of 2 days of " getting back to nature"

If you want to be bug free and not have the hassle of little bitey things -- then perhaps 5 star accommodation's is better suited rather than 5 million star

I'm amazed there's any wildlife left, i've heard it all now, outdoor surface spray and spreading baby powder down, just funny as.

What to ya do when you go swimming, is there a spray or powder for that too.

Baz.

Perhaps not camping on or near an ants' nest would help? LOL

I want to know how to stop that dreadful sound caused by the wind in the trees. And the bloody birds!

And the sun; what's with that! It burns my skin and gets in my eyes.

Is there some sort of outdoor air-conditioner? It's too hot in the middle of the day and too cool in the morning and evenings.

Redback , they probably take 5 Kg of chlorine for the rivers to turn them from natural green colour to blue..... before they swim ....

closest thing i take to bug killer is the camp fire :) ( and maybe a roll on aerogard)

A bit of surface spray on the legs of the camp table doesnt hurt.
Depends if your talking about a night or two camping for fun or a month or two living with the little buggers while working???
Cheers
