I have just purchased a new GU6 patrol and was wondering if there are any brands of roof rack that are better than others.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew
I went for the alloy rack sold by Opposite Lock. It's made in South Africa. Very pleased with it - light and easy to load.

We have the ARB full length steel. Very
well made and solid. BUT it is bleedin heavy. To remove/refit takes 4 people.

if you go for the main stream players such as ARB, TJM, Opposite lock generally have good reputations, but for a fee.
I personally have a rackmaster (opposite lock) and I'm real happy with it, no sides equals less drag when empty, but was the most expensive.
If you are planning a serious sort of trip DONT skimp on a rack, forget the
supermarket on special, one fits all thing, There plenty of tales out there of people going down into a culvert and having their roof rack land on the bonnet, or fall off the side, or snap in half.

Have a look at the Rhino racks. Strong, lightweight, lots of accessories.

I got 4 heavy duty rhino roofracks with a detachable rooftray. Have the shovel holders on one side and highlift/pvc pipe carriers on the other. Rooftray is a home made steel 1" boxing frame with 2mm thick aluminium paels deflector/full sides with a 1" weldmesh floor. Weighs 30kg but I can (and do) walk all over the top of it when up
the beach looking into gutters ect.
As the tray is detachable via 8 S/S u-bolts and I have rigged a pair of pulleys of a beam in the shed. Drive under, lower tray onto racks, do up the ubolts and drive off, takes 10 minutes at most, the reverse to remove it.
I had to go this setup as I/rug rats do a fair bit of surfing and you cant tie a surfboard on a roof tray unless its go no leading/trailing edges. Cost about $550 for the full set of racks plus $150 raw materials/weekend/2 cartons/shed full of welding fumes for the tray.
If you have a private email I can send you a photo if you want (cant figure out how to post a piccy :)).

I agree with a few of the above. Basially it is horses for courses. Depends what you want it for. I have a 3/4 length ARB on my GU6 and love it. Is heavy but I was still able to put it on by myself. but I carry a spare on the roof as
well as tent and a jerry etc.. If you are only carrying a swag and a shovel or something then the ARB rack is defenitly over kill and I would recommend the Rhino rack.. much lighter bt no where near as strong.. as for other brands eg OL or TJM, all good reputable brands.. I think it comes down to the look versus price when it comes to comparing the steel racks..

Gday all. Roof racks are great if you only put light stuff on them . Heavy gear like
water and fuel are hard to get up and down and will affect stability. I have had one hernia operation and dont want another. They do affect fuel consumption and are noisy at speed. If you leave them on, some carparks and garages are too low to get under. I have a pair of Rhino Roof bars and Zip tie a weld mesh
gate to it. Very heavy Zip Ties. That keeps it all pretty low on the GU Patrol. We probably take too much stuff that we will probably never use, I know for sure that I do.
