Am still looking at replacing the old Jack with a new something. Terracan (terrible name aintit)looks interesting, good warranty and price. Pathfinder also looks good, prefer diesel and don't want to spend as much as Prado and Pajero. Mainly road and tracks work towing offroad campertrailer, not continual rugged work. Rather like the Subi outback too but looks a bit small and do prefer diesel. Any one with nasty or nice experiences with Terracan or Pathfinder? Happy travelling, Don.

Don Im the same as you been looking at all the prospect for midsize 4wd for family touring.
Dad has had the CRDi Terracan for over a year now (nearly 2) and its been fantastic, towed my camper to Perth to Darwin and all over the ErePeninsular and its been great. Dollar for Dollar for what you get...I just dont like the look of it.
Looked at Pathy and think its a good contender...still lack a few of the Prado quality but will improve with a bit of time. Just a few complaints with ride quality and no second fuel tank and resale compared to Prado.

Yet I dont like the cost of Prad and the bullbar problems they are having...cracking radiator support panels.

It is a hrd choice a few good vehicles out there just have to find the best for you...none are perfect.

All the best with your search.

Matt.

ps..have a squiz at the new CRDi SanteFe blew me away with the NRMA test towing results!! One tank of fuel 78l from Melb to Syd towing a 17foot Jayco poptop.

The following lSite Link] should take you to the Australia4wd Terracan Forum.

As a Terracan owner of 3years or so I have nothing but praise for the vehicle. I've been to an awful lot of places that have supprised some. As a tow vehicle they are excellent. The CRDi's have an excellent fuel consumption. If getting one don't go the Trek-n-Tow is damned expensive and from what I've heard not much cop. A suspension upgrade is pretty much a must but many get by with the stock. I've got Tough Dogs and Polyairs and the difference is amazing.

Happy hunting.

Hi Don,
I have a 2006 Pathfinder Ti Diesel, tow's great and has everything I could want in it.
Price new was 57K with everything that opens and shuts but I am as happy as a pig in s#*t.
There will be a lot of people that knock them but I looked at the prado also and was just too expensive, about 15K more for the same thing.
Go to http://pcoa.org.au/forum/index.php , here you will find a lot of happy pathie owners.
Thanks Ben.

I have a new(5000ks) Terracan 2.9 CRDI with DP Chip-3inch Exhaust-Alloy Bullbar-Snorkel-Sheepskin seat covers-Paint &Interior Treatment-Cargo Barrier etc for well under $50K.There are still new(06)Terras at dealers around the country.I did a lot of looking and comparing before finally settling on the Hyundai.Had an Accent before this and it was a magic vehicle.(Gave it to my Grandson for his 17teenth).All the best. I know its not diesel, but we've had an Xtrail for 2 years now, and it has impressed us no end. Country trips ( not towing), we get 8.2-8.5 l/100km on premium unleaded. 132Kw goes like the clappers. 65litre fuel tank.

It has a 2000kg towing capacity - we see a lot of Xtrails towing caravans on the highways. Don't know what the economy is when towing.

New model (mild update) coming soon, so theres runout deals on the old model at present.

I've had a Petrol Jerry Can since June 04 (diesel wasn't out then) and it's been great. It is a bit thirsty, especially towing our 16 foot van, I get around 20L/100 km traveling at at 100 - 110 km/h.

Suspension upgrade from Ironman is about $1200 fitted and worth every cent.

At the money, with a five year warranty they're bloody hard to beat.

I did a lot of research on the available 4b's before settling on a Terracan.

I waited for Nissan to release the Pathfinder diesel, but did not like a couple of things. That little (2.5L) turbo diesel is working its guts out developing the terrific power / torque figures, just check out the turbo boost figure. Also, the rear seats (2nd row, not boot) are quite small compared to the Terracan.

If you go Terracan, try the standard suspension first, then upgrade if you feel you need to. The front end is pretty soft. Also, definitely go for the turbo diesel as much better economy.

Check out the Terracan forum recommended earlier. Well worth the visit, and a great bunch of guys (and gals) providing a heap of info.

Hyundai have stopped production of the Terra's, but there are still some available. 5 year, unlimited k's warranty is great.

enjoy
