i don't think its appropriate to go into it on this thread but if you've been to the cape in the past few years and experienced these bike tours, you'll know what i mean

Although I appreciate what you are on about it seems this accident was not a group of trail bikes in the dirt but a group of road bikes on the 110 km/hr bitumen south of Palmer River.
The two killed were on a Harley Davidson which crashed into a horse float turning into a property.

Do you mean bike tours in general, or a particular mob ? Mate of mine runs bike tours up there, and I'm sure he'd be interested in any negative feedback that applies to his mob, as he's very safety oriented.

OnYaBike. if that is the case then its a different story. that info hasn't yet filtered down to us Mexicans.

Footloose. when we were up there last year, we had minor issues with two trail bike tours. We saw them coming up behind us and did the Right Thing by pulling to the left to let them past. as soon as they had they would pull right back in front and spray our cars with rocks..( result... Smashed windscreen )... next time we weren't so accommodating. Its also not nessecary to start and ride your bike the 50mtrs every time you need to take a leak, particularly late at night.

talking to one of the tour leaders at Loyalty Beach, between cairns and the top they had required 3 riders to be air lifted out and another was hobbling around with a broken leg wondering how he was going to make the ride back.

any way , from what we saw, and heard from other 4WDers they were just cowboys. I'm not against having fun, but some respect for others would be nice.

Donks, I'll pass that "info" on to my mate. I know that he sometimes ejects any participant that isn't doing the right thing.

Hi Footloose, Donks and Anyone

This is not in relation to the unfortunate accident.

In fairness to these tours (your friend Footie) he may do a sterling job and I as many others here would hope he does. Remember word of mouth travels fast.

But I too have witnessed 3 motor bike tour groups (didn't stop to take groups names) and 2 were a credit to their leader and one group was not.

In 2002 the two groups mentioned were courteous and both lots were on the same afternoon. The first group were on the way up to the Cape and we were heading back home. They got off the narrow track for us somewhere near one of the Heathlands Ranger Station/Dulhunty/Gunshot turnoffs. The other pleasurable group stayed at the Dulhunty R. The tour group leader approached all concerned and said there would be a big group of riders coming in later. He asked would they be a nuisance seeing it was a big group. The campers all around including us, all said no. That group was loud but they were no trouble and fun to have around.

The group that wins the moroon's prize though happened in 2002 on the way back, about 2 days earlier. While swimming at Twin Falls a large group of bike riders just came down on mass fully geared out and plunged themselves in the water. Some did the right thing and stripped down a bit. This made the lagoon swimming area all mucky from their dusty gear. This was without regard to young kids and families swimming in there. I don't for minute deny they shouldn't have hopped in the water and riding all day I would want too as well. But the clear water was spoilt because of them. Most people hopped out and some had a few had words to which the group just ignored. Some also took off there gear in the water and rinsed it out. They didn't stay in the campground that night but moved on after their swim.

Anyone who has been there will know there are other places along the creek that they could've indulged without doing what they did. I don't know if there were with an organised group but even if they weren't they should've had respect for others already swimming there and the enviroment.

Just my observation on my various trips to the Cape and none of these bikers were from the same group.

Cya
:)

Well, this year... IN JUNE 2007...
A group of KNOBS on what seemed like YAMAHA Dirt Bikes were flying up the OTL, probably about 20 of them.
Flying as in 60 - 90kmh around blind corners.
I almost cleaned up at least 5 of them, it would have been more except for number 6 KNOBHEAD told me there was another 15 or so more bikes coming so i pulled over and waited.
Why should i have to pull over??
Because all these guys are going way to fast for the conditions.
Up ahead we came across a guy with a busted leg and another with a smashed up bike.
What a surprise....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could easily ride a dirt bike to the tip and back without incident.
I have been riding for 20yrs,, and i sam sure i could ride amongst cars without having them pull over.
