Hi,
I am new the site, I am after some advice about troop carriers. I am looking at a 99 toyota troopy, 4.2 (non turbo). about 260 000ks. Are they expensive if or when repairs required such as recon, or new engine, also I have been told that it is possible to get around 10k's per litre, is this achievable, I want to tow a boat and use the troopy to start looking around and
camping with the family etc. I am also interested in either fitting a trubo or gas conversion, has any one done either of these. Sorry for all the questions.

How many dollars do you want to spend for the purchase etc.
and were are you located.
It may help to answer your question a bit more.
Cheers Kev

The one I am looking at is around the $18000 mark, I know the history of the veh etc. Country NSW is the area.

Gearbox and Transfer can be cost a bit,I got 550,000+ G/B ($2600.00) and 670,000 + T/C ($1600.00), I wouldn't worry about the engine just yet,
mine has 711,000 klm and going strong

I forgot to mention,10kpl yes if you drive at feather foot 75kph, so you will have to be prepared to move over for others, and have patience . I did it for 900 klm on 90l

Yeh
well you know how it goes, It might last a bit longer now that I have retired it from Pilot work, Might be interested in a very occasional short job but don't care much,, I had it out today for a run over to
Orange but it had not been staeted for 4 days , it might last a bit longer now, and if the motor needs some attention I'll have a bit from super next year to do anything if need be, So in the mean time I'll just have to wait for a lotto win.....do pigs fly.

What would an average be re the fuel consumption? Normal driving not towing anything.

It depends once again how you drive, To tell the truth I don't ever worry about KPL , it had to go in regardless, but without running a 90L
tank dry I usually went the 650klm plus, and that's always at around the 90kph, if you want to cruise at 100 110 then the old needle will fall quick

New model came out in the second half of 1999. So the earlier model was a HZJ75 while the later model was a HZJ78. Major difference was the
suspension with the new model having coil spring front end, and longer rear leafs, so a much better ride. $18k is a reasonable price for a 78series. It would be upper end for a 75series.
Expensive to fix??? Like other rigid axle 4wds, the scheduled maintenance is expensive because of F&R wheel bearings, lots of oils and filters. But they are very reliable when
well maintained. But with 260k on the clock, you could be up for gearbox, or brakes etc etc so it needs a good inspection if you want to avoid surprises.
Like Doug says, you'd need to poke around pretty slowly to get 10l/100k. Most commonly get 13 l/100k touring the highway at 100kph without towing.
Have to be careful about turboing the 1Hz. Overheating and cracked precombustion chambers are issues.

I have a 2000 troopy 78 series with 180000 on the clock, The gearbox has been rebuilt 4 times, admittedly it works hard.
I wouldn't get $18000 for it so it is now the work
shop ute so to speak, It will also do the odd tour if it needs to as a spare.
I also sold a 99 75 series with 170000 km for $19000 4 years ago, my advice is be careful.
Cheers Steve.
