Has anyone put a second battery at the front of the engine bay on the passenger side of an '05' STR diesel.
I think I read somewhere about putting one in the rear of the engine bay(moving the fuel filter) but I think a bigger battery would fit at the front. But that would involve moving or doing away with the airfilter precleaner. Dont know if fitting a snorkel would help or still be in the way.

Swampy, I've done two. I took away the pre filter and made a battery cradle to fit an N70ZZ size battery. A few months ago I got a 130 ah deep cycle battery and had to made my cradle about 30 mm longer. It still fitted ok. I made my own snorkel coming straight out of the paper air cleaner inlet, through into the mudguard and dog legged it a bit to come out just above the plastic wheel arch. The air inlet is sort of triangular under the bonnet but with a bit of help from the heat gun I was able to form it circular to fit 2" exhaust pipe. You'll notice that the standard battery is not quite square with the front of the vehicle, you'll also have to put the second cradle on the same angle to get the battery room. Rus.

I picked up a battery tray that fits in against the fire wall. you have to move the fuel filter, but this is easy, as it bolts onto the battery tray. Had to shorten the fuel line a tiny bit. Only needed to drill two holes into the small shelf on the fire wall, all the other mounting bolts go into tapped points that are already there.

My second battery sits in a cradle down the rear left side of the engine bay, just beside the Turbo.

One associated problem is that I am forever topping the levels up. Thid is because of the excess heat beside the turbo, and boiled the thing 3 times on our last outback trip.

Gotta give it to the battery though, she is a good one, it has been drained of charge countless times, before I had read a few of the posts, on this forum. Now I watch it like a hawke, and do not run it down too much
Cheers
